About Gary Acton
I have over 25 years experience as a research scientist with a focus on scientific ocean drilling, geomagnetism, paleomagnetism, marine geophysics, plate tectonics, paleoenvironmental change, and chronostratigraphy. I have participated on 13 scientific ocean drilling expeditions in a variety or roles including Chief scientist, project manager, staff scientist, paleomagnetist, and stratigraphic correlator. In addition, I participated as the chronstratigraphy team leader in the ANDRILL (Antarctic Geologic Drilling) SMS Project in the Ross Sea and I have conducted field work in paleomagnetism across the U.S., in the Afar region of Ethiopia, in Greece, and along Lake Baikal in Russia.In 2017, I switched jobs from doing research and teaching at Sam Houston State University to managing the Department of Technical and Analytical Services and conducting research at the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP), which is located within Texas A&M University.
