I joined Ingleton Wood with the prospect of being instrumental in establishing a Cambridge office for the Practice. Setting up, recruiting and leading the Building Surveying team and creating an IW footprint in the region takes great energy and effort. With the equally hard work of colleagues from other disciplines, we have managed to create a stable, sustainable and profitable business unit.Our projects are varied and across different sectors - Education, Higher Education, Health, Blue Light and Residential are all very familiar environments for us.

Responsible for project delivery; assembling design teams, briefing to client needs and programming. I ran a large number of concurrent projects (typically 10 to 25, ranging from c£150k to £7m), requiring me to be flexible and industrious and to multi-task.Co-ordination of designs within design teams, ensuring that details of schemes are buildable and challenging / trouble shooting details for technical correctness.Acting as client's agent through the design and construction process ensuring compliance with brief and contractor delivery.Responsible for developing relationships, meeting and negotiating with clients to secure new business.Recruiting, establishing and mentoring new and junior staff members.Member of Senior Management Team for business unit.Overall Management of ‘Schools Direct' business within unit; responsible for the delivery of agreed services to c80 individual school clients.

Promoted to lead the team of seven surveyors (including 3 graduates) with all line management responsibility. Responsible for staff appraisal of direct reports as well as indirect responsibility for staff development.Organisation and management of design teams for a number and range of projects of varying value and in parallel; some c£100k, typically c£400k but rising to c£3MFinancial Project Management of a number of projects, responsible for time allocation, control and P&L. Full design and management of projects up to a value of c£1M from feasibility through to completion, including taking / developing client brief, specification writing and production of full tender and contract documentation, then Contract Administration. New-build (extension) and refurbishment projects undertaken for schools, libraries, residential homes, offices, etc.DDA / SENDA assessments and reports for various buildings, encompassing all sections of the DDA.Planning submissions and negotiation for various projects; these included undertaking design work and production of plans, etc, with AutoCAD.Management of ‘Schools Direct' business within the Cambridge office, winning and managing contracts with individual schools as clients.

Direct responsibility for the energy management of the council's stock. With wider jurisdiction, under the Home Energy Conservation Act (HECA) for the city's homes generally.Strategy development and implementation for budget dependent improvement programs. Also responsible for overseeing budget for responsive repairs.Redeveloped Council's energy policy to encompass DETR requirements to counter fuel poverty and provide affordable warmth.Through regional HECA Forum, elected as representative at National Forum, including briefing MPs at WestminsterDesigned asset management database for housing stock programmes of work, encompassing Decent Homes and energy improvements.Tender evaluation and contract management processes, including full project management.Advising non-technical colleagues of appropriate measures in refurbishment and repairInstrumental in attaching energy database to a GIS system, enabling reports to be produced through digital maps. This project attracted a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award' from the NHER (National Home Energy Rating).Elected representative for the Eastern region on the Energy Saving Trust's Energy Efficiency Partnership for Homes for the UK HECA Forum. This activity included presenting to MPs at Westminster.Represented the Council on the Building Research Establishment's Housing Group (BRHG) and was involved in its Steering Group.

Family businessResponsible for overseeing fast-track refurbishment projects: mainly public houses for clients such as Grand Metropolitan Estates. Liaison with clients to establish requirements and programme. Responsible for all estimating and client liaison, contract staffing and execution.; Took time out to travel around the world

Undertook engineering/management duties on a number of construction and civil engineering projects for companies such as Balfour Beatty, Laing, Amey and Mouchel amongst others.
