Gary Clow is an entrepreneur. His current venture, VideaStream, is investigating the application of artificial intelligence technologies in the field of video compression.Mr. Clow was a co-founder of Stac, the publisher of Stacker, an award-winning compressed file system for DOS/Windows and the Mac OS that resulted in a 2:1 efficiency improvement in file storage. At Stac, he was the founding Chairman/CEO and was responsible for raising three rounds of venture capital, followed by Stac’s initial public offering on NASDAQ.After prolonged negotiations with Microsoft over their use of Stac's proprietary data compression technology, Stac brought and won a $100+M patent infringement lawsuit against Microsoft in 1992. The court victory precipitated a quick settlement in the form of a strategic partnership that resulted in a Microsoft equity investment and multi-year royalty agreement. As Stac Chairman/CEO he oversaw the formation and spin-off of the Hifn fabless semiconductor subsidiary specializing in processors which implement information theory functions such as source coding (data compression), channel coding (error correction) and cryptography.Mr. Clow started his professional career at Motorola, where he developed a channel coding algorithm allowing messages to be sent reliably over the airwaves, enabling Motorla’s entry into digital display paging, the world's first wireless mobile messaging system. While at Motorola he was a co-inventor on two digital display pager signaling patents. Only one year out of graduate school, his outstanding contributions were recognized and he was chosen by Marty Cooper, widely regarded as "the inventor of the cell phone" and Motorola's Corporate VP of Research, to be Motorola’s representative to the Silicon Structures Project, a joint industry-university research effort into silicon compiler technology at Caltech.
