Wrote and debugged custom templates not found in the STL. The source languages include Python, C++ and Google’s protobuf.• Added ability for user to choose new filters for his geographical maps. Rovi Corporation (formally Macrovision) is a digital entertainment company. • Worked with the BD+ anti-piracy group (now part of Irdeto) on software to prevent the unauthorized copying of Blu-ray disks.• Wrote Java software to be installed on Blu-ray disks that determines if the Blu-ray player is legitimate or if it a pirating platform. This is an important aspect of the copy protection and it requires an extensive knowledge of the various Java specifications including BD-J.

ASML Optics (now a division of Zygo Corporation) manufactures Lenses and precision glass structures for use in the semiconductor industry and other industries needing high precision optics.• Designed and wrote a large network application to monitor environment variables affecting laser interferometer devices. Application had to get data from network and RS232 devices. Wrote code to allow the third party interferometer devices to use the data to adjust the lasers. The target languages were Python, C++ and SQL.• Wrote a front end application to monitor and display environment data from test rooms. The user can display current data trends and historical data. The target languages were Visual Basic and SQL.• Ported several old MS-DOS machine control programs to XP in C/C++. One calculated the lens radius measurements based on laser interferometer data and current environment data.• Implemented an environment control application to maintain a constant room temperature. Temperature in a 3 meter by 3 meter by 5 meter space was held to +/- 0.1 °C.• Wrote GUI applications to locate and display microscopic defects on a lens. Implemented a data base to track how the defects changed during processing. The target language was Python.• Ported and updated a machine control program written in Fortran used to polish lenses.• Many of the projects required meeting with the end users to get the requirements and to resolve issues.

Puritan Bennett, a division of Tyco Healthcare (now part of Medtronic), manufactures ventilators, a critical life support medical device (class II). • Worked with the embedded software department developing the customer GUI.• Wrote the customer requirements after meeting with project stakeholders and led the team that designed the GUI layout and feel, implementing the design thru an iterative spiral process. • One of a three member team writing the GUI software. The software was written in C++ and runs on an embedded system under the Integrity OS and under Windows XP using the Peg GUI development environment. The GUI display was controlled by a State Design Pattern implemented using Rhapsody modeling software.• Created several custom PEG GUI widgets that were used by products running on different hardware platforms.• Team Lead of the internationalization support team for the GUI. Researched and developed successful methods needed to support the multiple languages required by the GUI. These languages included the Eastern Asian and Eastern European alphabets using the UNICODE character set. Developed ventilator specific glyphs that are not part of the standard UNICODE character set for use by the application.• All projects were developed using the FDA's requirements for process control, including documentation and reviews.• Supplied the original idea for 2 US patents: 8,413,659 and 8,813,750 (“Self-sizing adjustable endotracheal tube”).

Sega.com (now a part of Nokia Mobile Phones) was an online gaming company specializing in games produced by the other Sega companies. • Primarily worked on server side applications for the online gaming group. The target languages at Sega were C++ and Java.• Designed and implemented a single-threaded TCP/IP server using OO techniques and Design Patterns. This server needed to use the select() OS call because the expected number of connections prevented the standard one-thread-per-connection server architecture. • Also designed and implemented the client API library to interface with the server. The software runs under Unix (Solaris 2.8), Linux (Red Hat 7.3 and Debian), Windows 2000 and Cygwin. Target languages were C++ and Java.• Designed and implemented several multi-threaded TCP/IP daemons using OO techniques and Design Patterns. Also designed and implemented an UDP daemon. Designed and implemented the client API libraries to interface with the daemons, all under Unix (Solaris 2.8) and Windows2000.• The client API libraries I wrote were required to be thread-safe (in case the client application was multithreaded) but they were also not allowed to start their own threads. This prevented use of the standard technique of having a dedicated thread to handle I/O over shared network connections. The target platforms included cell phones, set top boxes (e.g. PS2) and PCs.• Enhanced other TCP/IP daemons and associated client libraries. Assisted other engineers in the testing and debugging of projects. Produced GUIs to test the various network daemons and associated client libraries.

Etec (now a division of Applied Materials) produces Mask Pattern Etch Systems for the semiconductor manufacturing industry. I worked mostly with the CAD data processing group and in the data transfer group.• Designed via a Spiral Process and lead the group that developed a complex GUI for hardware control using MFC on Windows NT. Met with various levels of users for project requirements determination.• Converted stand-alone UNIX programs into multi-threaded CORBA services running under WindowsNT and Unix (Solaris).• Organized and mediated a series of lunch time workshops designed to improve coworkers C++/OOP skills. Team lead of a group that developed software-coding standards.• Designed and implemented several TCP/IP daemons. Two daemons, used to send commands to our robotic substrate handling hardware, were required to process asynchronous input from several different sources in a way that prevented the use of the standard "client-server" RPC architecture. Maintained several RPC-based daemons and enhanced one to greatly increase data throughput by adding a simple First-In, First-Out data cache.• Lead a study group using Scott Meyers' book Effective C++ to improved coworkers Object Oriented Programming Skills.
