Responsible for direction and oversight of the Product Development Lab, an organization of about 100 scientists and technicians. Management of all aspects of Benjamin Moore & Company’s R&D and Product Development efforts. Areas of responsibility include (1) the development of best in class architectural and industrial maintenance coatings formulations, colorant formulations and latex polymers, (2) color technology including color prescriptioning, (3) personnel development for technical and leadership success, (4) intellectual property generation and maintenance, (5) digitalization efforts, (6) collaboration with Procurement on raw materials risk mitigation strategies, (7) measurement and improvement of R&D maturity, and (8) partnering cross-functionally with the Marketing, Manufacturing, Procurement, Quality, Product Stewardship and Legal functions.

Manager of a group of senior scientists, scientists and associate chemists charged with 1) the development of new and improved polymers for architectural coatings and 2) upgrades to the current product line via polymer development and/or formulation modification. Research and development work has included improvement of dry film properties, stability, hiding and application of both interior and exterior paints.

Work focused on paint formulation along with polymer synthesis. Product areas included solid color stains and interior paints. Research and development work included improvement of paint dry film properties, in-can stability, hiding and application. Part of the three member team that developed Arborcoat Solid Deck and Siding Stain, which was rated the top solid color stain in the June 2014 issue of Consumer Reports. Supervised both technicians and senior researchers.

Synthesis of polymers for use in ink and adhesive applications, and product line support. Developed an experimental low VOC heatsetting ink employing an in-house synthesized emulsion polymer. Developed a non-aqueous dispersion for a heat sealable adhesive. Used Six Sigma methodology to identify key properties of a supplied resin that affected both flush and ink properties.

Development of tackifier and coating dispersions for the adhesive and paper industries, respectively. Co-winner of 1995 International Paper Product Innovation Award for the development of a sizing dispersion for use in paper-based products. Prepared tackifiers via cationic oligomerizations of piperylene, isobutylene, terpenes, and epoxides. Supervised both professionals and technicians.

Polymer/Monomer R&D. Polymer synthesis via free radical and cationic polymerizations. Monomer synthesis. Developed a technique for reduction of residual monomer to acceptable levels in a polymer product line. Determined the source of an emulsion copolymer production problem and implemented a raw material test which led to greater product consistency. Supervised both professionals and technicians.
