I have worked with people who have a learning disability for 35 years in various settings including, secure, NHS, voluntary and independent sectors I have been a qualified learning disability nurse for 28 years and a learning disability nurse consultant for 8 years. I have extensive experience of transition services, working in the community, challenging behaviour units, forensic services and prisons. I have also worked in child and adult services. While working in a number of Scottish prisons, I developed and implemented a large number of systems and services which have been used across the UK and internationally. The ‘Blueprint’ system for identifying and supporting learning disabled people in a prison environment is now used in over 60 prisons in 12 different countries.I am passionate about evidence based research and have had a number of research articles published. I continue to write and have other research projects pending publication. I am also on the editorial board of the Journal of Intellectual Disabilities and Offending Behaviour.I helped develop a number of innovative projects that have received over 1.1 million pounds of funding, namely the Positive Tracks service and SOLD (Supporting Offenders with Learning Disabilities) network in Scotland.
