Gary E. R. Hook, M.Sc (hons), Ph.D.,D.Sc. I am the Founder, Chairman and acting CEO of the Matau Group. I am a scientist, educator, and social commentator. I was born and raised in New Zealand although I came to the USA many years ago where I lived and worked at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. I am a citizen of the USA. I hold a Masters degree in chemistry, a Ph.D. in biochemistry and a D.Sc. in biochemistry. I worked at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIH) in Research Triangle Park, North carolina as a biochemist studying oil production by mammalian cells under both normal and disease conditions and was head of the Biochemical Pathology Group. I also held adjunct appointments at UNC and Duke University. In 2001 I was appointed CEO of an indigenous university in New Zealand (NZ) a position I held for 5 years. In this role as CEO I was highly successful both in raising the educational standards of the institution and its financial profitability. Over the course of 5 years I raised both the annual income of the institution and its student body more than 10-fold. Since then I have served in numerous roles such as a Director of the Foundation for Research Science and Technology (NZ Govt), Director of the Centre for Molecular Biodiscovery (Auckland University, NZ), Chairman of the Waikato Endowed College (NZ), and as Chairman of the Risk and Assessment Committee of the New Zealand Māori Council. I have published over 200 papers in both the natural and social sciences as well as in the popular press. Much of my life as a scientist at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (Research Triangle Park, North Carolina) was spent studying the biosynthesis of lipids and oils by mammalian cells which, incidentally, is much more difficult than the study of lipid biosynthesis by microalgae. In this area of lipid biochemistry in mammalian cells I have published extensively (see for example ); however, I am not trying to present myself as a cutting edge researcher in the field of lipid biochemistry, because it has been many years since I worked in the field; I include this simply to demonstrate my scientific training, knowledge and business experience. I am certain that the Matau Group could contribute in a major way to solving the current dilemma facing the world as the burning of fossil fuels continues to drive climate change.
