Bi Analyst/Developer

Fisher Outdoor

St Albans, United Kingdom

Migrated Fisher's SSAS cubes and Kimball warehouse from SQL Server 2008r2 to 2012, including SSIS ETL. The underlying transactional relational database was migrated from Epicore 9 to Epicore 10. Implemented their new DSPanel business intelligence solution using SQL Server 2012 stack. I worked closely with the financial team to produce the correct management accounting numbers. I also created a new Inventory Datamart including cubes based on Kimball, from scratch. Fisher is one of the largest E commerce companies in the UK selling cycling equipment. For the migration, I added new slowly changing shared dimensions, fact tables, built scoped MDX calculated measures queries(business rules), also added ETL column calculated measures where necessary, usually for performance considerations. Create ETL using views, scripts and SSIS where required. This required liaising with users and technical stakeholders and understanding the requirement and carry out the technical analysis, timelines and make the changes where required and develop new components where required. Reporting was done using Excel with DSPanel plug-ins and SSRS reports. I was involved with creating and modifying both. Sql Agent used to schedule warehouse loads.

May 2014 - Oct 2014

Business Intelligence Developer

Cbs Outdoor

London

This E commerce company does the bulk of the outdoor billboard type advertising for the underground, buses and railways in the UK. They have to track inventory, work specifications, work carried out, and all finances around this. It is a complicated system of many variables.Developed 2 Kimball star schema warehouses and SSAS cubes mostly from scratch, using the Microsoft BI stack (2008 r2) [SSIS, SSAS, SQL Server]. The SSAS cubes were for helpdesk support reporting, and a Financial Invoice Reporting cube that added to what they already reported on. The helpdesk reporting cube looked at calls handled, time to resolution, technician, area, open, closed, and type. The invoicing cube handled data for work scheduled, work done, sub-contractor, area, inventory, costs and revenue. Some new dimensions were created, mostly slowly changing of type 0 and 2 of type II. Some shared conforming dimensions re-used. New measures were created and some old measures were re-used into new measure groups. In short, the SSAS cubes had to fit into the existing warehouse. Cube data was fed into a Cognos reporting layer. I was also involved with debugging and changing existing warehouses and cubes. CBS source database system is a legacy Epicor9 transaction database with a lot of python customized scheduling built around the SQL server environment. SSIS ETL was used to pull data, clean and transform it from the Epicore system into our Kimball star schemas via staging. Data was also obtained from Excel spreadsheets via SISS. Data transformation within SSIS was mostly done calling SQL stored procedures.Used MDX in the business rules of the Cubes. Built KPIs comparing invoice totals to similar periods in history into the invoicing cube. Subversion source control.

Jul 2013 - Jan 2014

Datawarehouse Developer

Momentum Pictures (Now Eone Entertainment)

London, United Kingdom

The company had built a Kimball data warehouse using the SQL Server 2008r2 BI stack and DSPanel tools built on the Epicor9 relational database to supply data to financial Profit and Loss and Balance Sheet reports that daily track revenue movements of their library of films, TV shows and theatricals from 4 continents. They had spent 2 years on it and it was not functioning. I did the Business Analysis working with the financial manager to get the requirements and the output numbers correct. I rebuilt the warehouse mainly by adding new calculated members into the Star Schema fact tables to optimize the processing time of the SSAS cubes. Moved some expensive MDX business rules into the ETL. Loaded data incrementally and archived off the historic data into its own cube. I partitioned the cube. I optimized the SSIS, SQL and MDX application code. Optimized some slow dynamic SQL. I recommended new SSD servers and we got the system operational within 3 months. The warehouse could be now be completely refreshed for 300 million rows loaded from scratch , with SSIS ETL, per complete load as well as the SSAS cubes rebuilt from scratch within 1 hour as opposed to the +-27 hours on the previous virtual server setup. The system could be incrementally refreshed in less than 1/2 hour. Most reports are produced in Excel by the users themselves, but I wrote about 10 specialized reports in SSRS. They get 3 warehouse refreshes per day, as required, giving them 3 fresh snapshots of the Profit and Loss/ Balance Sheet of the business. The system uses the Microsoft BI stack(2008 r2) [SSIS,SSAS,SQL Server] , native Excel for reporting , and an Excel compatible front end called Performance Planner that the non-technical user with appropriate permissions can alter the dimensions and business rules of the warehouse. I wrote C# script tasks inside SSIS to communicate with the Excel webservice plugin interface to deploy the cube.

Jun 2011 - Jul 2013

Datawarehouse Developer

London, United Kingdom

Designing and developing Kimball Star Schema data marts as well as an Inmon style normalized Enterprise Warehouse to provide financial reports in a Cognos layer. Reports include general ledger, payroll and some HR employee data. HR salary data was encrypted using private/public keys and certificates. Data was collected and stored from staging into an Imon style normalized warehouse for ease of Master Data Management. Star schemes and cubes were built off this. All development done using SQL, Stored Procedures and SSIS. System is SQL Server 2005 with Oracle feeds into staging.

Datawarehouse/Olap Bi Design

Geopost have implemented an open source Business Intelligence datawarehouse system from scratch using MYSQL and Pentaho. I was responsible for the design and technical implementation of the warehouse, cubes and interfaces, as well as warehouse training and handed the system over to the IT team at Geopost. The company transports over half million packages per day and management requires that daily information and KPIs are available as to the state of the business. The system is a Kimball-style Star Schema warehouse, with relational elements, using the Pentaho BI stack on Linux in a MYSQL enterprise database taking data from the transactional legacy system on AS400. I was responsible for developing the cubes and aggregate tables using the open source Pentaho Mondrian engine. Pentaho Cube browsing was done using JPivot. I wrote some Java interfaces to the Pentaho cube for the applications to communicate with the cubes. Performance is key partitions and indexing strategies were used. MDX to query the cubes. Slowly changing shared dimensions were implemented. Stage Loading was optimized incrementally and using SQL sets where possible, with rollback and audit integrity. The reporting system is JasperReports and used Spreadsheet connected to the cubes to report data. Used PHP, Java for middleware functions to interface with datawarehouse where required.

Using views, T-SQL and stored procedures to build the warehouses. Developed Cubes using Analysis Services with MDX queries supplied to SSRS reports. The vast amount of data required incremental loads and cleaning using SSIS. Cube were partitioned based on time. Data Reconciliation stored procedures were developed and maintained to reconcile data between cubes, source and warehouse to be used for audit purposes.

Novarising

London, United Kingdom

Developed an OLAP warehouse Business Intelligence solution from scratch for the BBC, - web front-end with expected 100,000's/millions of views daily.Using open source Linux, MYSQL, JAVA, APACHE, TOMCAT, PHP, Pentaho Mondrian, MDX tools. I was wholly responsible for the databases and warehouse design, development and implementation, and also of the LINUX TOMCAT/JAVA/Pentaho Mondrian environment setup, ETL, staging warehouse, cubes, and MDX queries. Using KIMBALL for Star Schema, stored procedures for ETL into staging and population of the warehouse tables. Cubes schema is in XML and is built in Pentaho Mondrian. JPivot used for cube browsing. JAVA tags are called to process MDX queries on the cube and return data to the Web GUI. - The system is compliant and portable to Microsoft Analysis Services and SQL Server with T-SQL. MDX is the industry standard for OLAP query.Required to interface PHP with the JAVA tags library for the OLAP engine. Used APACHE frontend and TOCMCAT backend with a JAVA/PHP bridge to serve both PHP and JSP requests onto the Pentaho Mondrian OLAP cubes. This was necessarily an AGILE environment because although we had a conceptual spec, there was no clear idea at the start how we would get to the end, so constant refinement and feedback was required.
