Joined NeTpower, a dedicated NT Systems manufacturer, providing pre and post sales technical support for NT workstations and servers to NeTpowers’ city based financial clients and business partners. Responsibilities included technical account management of existing clients, sales and technical presentations to prospective clients, consultation with independent software vendors in order to further integrate their products on to NT systems and to aid selling process by providing complete solutions. During my time at NeTpower, the revenue generated by the city sales office grew to represent half that of the entire UK operation.

Employed as a senior team member to plan and implement a common platform for the company’s new front and back office systems based upon Windows NT 4.0 and the Telerate TRS system. This involved the planning and implementation of a migration from Novell 3.11, and a new company wide messaging system using MS Exchange. TCP/IP was implemented as a common protocol for all systems using the network in order to allow complete communication between new and legacy applications, and a new FDDI based network installed. Ultimately focusing on server maintenance and tuning, evaluation of new products and configuration and use of SMS.

Part of a team responsible for support of all software deployed throughout the authority, essentially NT Server 3.51 combined with LAN Manager 2.2 Domains, Windows 3.1, and MS Office running on Apricot hardware. I was extensively involved in the roll out of 2000 Windows for Workgroups clients through upgrade of LAN Manager/Windows 3.1 to user education and acceptance and ultimately support. Longer term projects involved ongoing evaluation of new hardware, upgrade strategies and documentation of standards.

Initially recruited by Network Si to work on a new contract at Salomon Brothers where I joined the LAN support team. My primary task was maintaining the Ethernet TCP/IP network in the dealing room. Other duties undertaken were installation/configuration of new network equipment, implementation of new cabling installations, supervision of third party contractors, co-ordination of moves, documentation of LAN and monitoring/fault finding of less critical areas of the company’s infrastructure.

I joined GEC on leaving school under their apprentice scheme attending college on a day release basis in order to gain an ONC. I worked in a divisional computer services department ultimately becoming part of a team responsible for the DEC Path works and Microsoft LAN Manager Systems, design of new structured cabling installations and migration to an FDDI backbone.
