This role was project managing a remote software team based in India and a local hardware and mechanical team in the UK. It included introduction of Agile practices, both through Scrum and Kanban as well as CMMI practices leading to both SCAMPI and internal process appraisals.Also includes• Mentoring and supporting engineers• Developing and reviewing architecture and system designs• Developing and reviewing processes and procedures• Supporting the quality team and driving quality improvements• Factory support and obsolescence management• Technical support backup for complex site issues including site visits• Marketing literature creation for product releases• Customer interaction during customer needs and human factors assessments• Supporting trade shows• Providing technical input to the sales teams to support customer enquiries• Reporting on project status to senior management• Supporting the Marketing and Management functions with technical input during roadmap planning and throughout project developmentI sat on the Intellectual Property steering committee for my business group and have a patent filed for a non-linear cable monitoring solution.

My role was extended to also included a Brand Leadership element working as a small team with the Product Manager, Sales Leader and Marketing Manager for Morley-IAS to set the road map for the brand, and ensure the business focused on the performance of the individual brand within the Honeywell group.I also sat on a standards committee with the Building Research Establishment developing standard for fault tolerant fire systems networks.I continued to manage the ZX panel maintenance and on development of the DXc to make it suitable for sale in further regions, with additional enhanced approvals and create OEM versions.

The legacy Morley-IAS panels were proving difficult to maintain, and were limited in capability, so in 2008 I was asked to take on a project to re-engineer the DX panel into a new product with better user interface, networking, and remote access. The project had many challenges:Setting up and managing a team of 10 software engineers in IndiaManaging local electronics and mechanical engineersDeveloping both embedded panel software and Windows based support toolsManaging significant business change due to factory closures and corporate IT changesWorking with multiple remote teams (Two sites in the UK, Two sites in India and one Site in Romania)Reverse engineering a design with minimal documentation and limited in house product knowledgeBalancing the needs of multiple sales regionsWorking with a wide array of stakeholders including End Customers, Senior Internal Business Managers, Manufacturing, Sales and MarketingManaging the full life cycle of the project from Idea through Customer Needs Investigation, Concept Definition, Planning and Specification, Implementation, Verification, Validation and DeliveryManaging project budgeting and expenditureParallel development and third party approvalAt the same time I have also been responsible for maintenance projects on older products, feasibility studies into concept ideas like network bridging, internet based remote access.

In 2006 I was asked to take on the role of Morley-IAS Technology Leader as a figure head for the Morley-IAS brand following the closure of the Morley deign office. Morley-IAS was the result of business acquisitions, from which the original design team had been retained until this time. I had responsibility for supporting the DX and ZX legacy fire control panels using both contract software engineers and our internal software engineering team.

In 2002 I was asked to project manage a new conventional fire panel development and lead a small hardware, software and mechanical team through the development process to completion. This is was the highest volume fire panel manufactured by the business until recently with over 50 branded variants.

In 1999 I was promoted to hardware team leader, working under the Hardware Manager, both updating the design of the ID2000 to create a new ID3000 product and also setting up design procedures and mentoring the other team members.

I started with Notifier Fire Systems as a Senior Hardware Engineer in 1997. I started off working on the hardware design of the ID2000 fire control panel, with responsibility for the core CPU (HC11) and the underlying architecture of the panel design. I also worked on other legacy products investigating and fixing design defects.

I ran my own company, Potential Electronics, full time for two years and part time for some months before. During this time I continued working on a contract basis for AML below and for the Presentation Unit, creating automated control systems for their architectural building models, developing both the hardware and software.At the same time I also developed some own brand disability products including, a cooking reminder and a simple communication device based around PIC micro-controllers. I was solely responsible for all aspects of the projects including research, hardware and software design, development, production, finance, sales and marketing. This taught me a great deal about end to end product design and has given me a more holistic view of the whole process.

AML make scientific instrumentation and mechanisms for the ultra high vacuum industry. AML sponsored me for the second and third of my degrees industrial placements and I continued with them for six years afterwards. At AML I worked on development projects with the MD, taking growing responsibility for the design and development of all aspects of the power supply, micro-processor, and analogue circuitry in all the companies products. In addition to R&D work I was also responsible for production, test and inspection. This included supervising and training the production staff, designing and building test equipment, organising and maintaining production and development documentation, quality assurance, site and product safety. I also managed the customer services department including diagnosing and repairing faulty and damaged equipment.

I worked as a junior engineer for a year before starting the sandwich degree course and during the first six month industrial placement. UMI sponsored me during the first two years until the company closed its R&D department in 1987. I worked on the design and development of a light industrial / health care robot. I worked on a variety of different projects including designing a PC driven infra-red remote control unit, selecting a PCB CAD package, drafting circuits both manually and on computer and general construction and testing. I was also responsible for supervising the production of prototype equipment.
