Arctic Nearshore Impact Monitoring in Development Area (ANIMIDA; cANIMIDA; ANIMIDA3) Programs Research assistant with the U.S.Bureau of Ocean Energy Managment (Minerals Management Service’s), Beaufort Sea, Arctic Nearshore Impact Monitoring in the Development Area (ANIMIDA) and continuations (cANIMIDA & ANIMIDA3) Programs. Over seven years of field study collected sediment cores, water samples, suspended particulate samples, fish tissue samples and conducted in situ water quality assessments in the vicinity of the Northstar Development Island, Liberty Prospect the Sagavanirktok River and the Colville River in Harrison Bay sites to evaluate potential effects of development, especially oil industry related contaminants - metals and organics. Four field programs of this study involved through ice studies of sediment transport during spring breakup using snowmachines to access sample sites where sensor arrays were suspended through six feet of ice.Prince William Sound RCAC LTEMP Program. Field technician for the Prince William Sound Regional Citizens’ Advisory Council’s (RCAC’s) Long-Term Environmental Monitoring Program (LTEMP). This program was designed to monitor the potential impacts of petroleum hydrocarbons on biota and sediments in Prince William Sound and the Gulf of Alaska.

Beginning in 2008 Mr. Lawley Captained the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s research vessel R/V Launch 1273 based out of Prudhoe Bay and performing a variety of research projects in the Beaufort and Chuckchi Seas during the open water season. These included a five year Bowhead whale tagging study conducted at Pt. Barrow by Wood’s Hole Oceanographic Institute. Several monitoring and exploratory dive and camera sled surveys performed by University of Alaska Fairbanks researchers studying unique assembledges of kelps, soft corals and associated biota in nearshore environs. Additional projects included periodic maintenance of remote weather sensing sites for BOEM, deploying and retrieving current meters, and calibration of a microradar sea surface current monitoring station for USGS and UAF.

Field technician during five seasons of a study of anadromous fish in the nearshore environment of the Beaufort Sea. Study parameters included recruitment, genetic distribution, fecundity and migration habits of five target species correlated with marine/estuarine temperature and salinity gradients. Responsible for the siting, installation, and maintenance of Fyke nets, identification and tagging of fish, collection of water quality data, collection of genetic samples, and the operation and maintenance of support skiffs. A variety of tagging methods were used to identify Fyke net-captured and recaptured fish.
