About Gary Magee
Gary Magee is an innovative and dynamic researcher, educator and academic leader. He is Professor of Economics at Monash University and Research Affiliate at the Centre for Economic History at The Australian National University. He is Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in the United Kingdom. His undergraduate training was undertaken in Melbourne, where he completed a history degree from Monash and then a first-class honours degree in economics from La Trobe. At La Trobe he was a D. M. Myer University Medallist. In 1991, he went to the University of Oxford as a Commonwealth Scholar and obtained his doctorate from Nuffield College, Oxford. He has held academic positions at the Australian National University, the University of Melbourne, La Trobe and the University of London and has had visiting fellowships at the University of Oxford, the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, the China Development Institute in Shenzhen, the University of Leeds, the University of Johannesburg, the University of Zululand, the University of Stellenbosch, and the Center for the History of Business, Technology and Society in Wilmington, Delaware. He is a former Deputy Dean Research, Associate Dean Graduate, Chair of the Monash Business & Sustainability Network, and Director of the Centre for Global Business at Monash Business School. He has also been the Director of the Asian Economics Centre at the University of Melbourne and Head of the School of Economics & Finance at La Trobe. In 2005, he held an Australian Bicentennial Fellowship from the Menzies Research Centre at the University of London. He has published widely in the fields of economic history, globalisation, transnationalism, innovation and technological change, industrial development, and historical political economics. In 2018, he was listed as Australia’s ‘Field Leader’ in 2 fields: Economic History and History (The Australian, 26/9/18, pp, 12 & 36). A selection of his publications are listed below.
