Re-structuring then occurred within our team and again after a successful interview, I was promoted to a Senior Officer. I am carrying out similar tasks to my previous post, however I have added responsibility in terms of asset management and budget control. I have the responsibility of prioritising the schemes for both the Capital & Revenue budgets (£900k) as well as completing all asset management information required by Local Government.

After a successful interview process, I gained a permanent position within the Bridge & Structural Design team. I was responsible for the Bridge Revenue budget which is used for the maintenance of the Council’s bridge & structures asset stock. From inspections, I prioritise the works required, design the work, prepare contract documents (NEC3 Conditions of Contract), procure the works through the Public Contracts Scotland Portal as per standing orders and finally supervise on site. I also carried out replacement and strengthening works to our structures, which were paid from the Capital budget. I carried out General & Principal Inspections of our bridge and culvert stock. I continued to check Building Standards Applications for proposed extensions or internal alterations, etc. I also inspected and reported on any structural defects within the Council’s Housing Stock. As a team, we also provided a structural design consulting service to our in-house Architects, providing calculations and drawings for structural elements. Finally, we had a term contract with Clackmannanshire Council to carry out General & Principal Inspections on their structures stock and report back, providing a programme of maintenance works.

I started my apprenticeship at Falkirk Council in the Network Section where my responsibilities included approving access protections markings, disabled parking bay applications and traffic regulation orders. After 11 months I moved to Roads Development where I carried out checks on planning applications against Falkirk Council’s Design Guidelines. I also worked on many new roads schemes, after approving their Roads Construction Consents (RCC’s). After a further 11 months I moved into the Bridge & Structural Design team. I carried out checks on the structural adequacy of Building Standards applications. I also carried out bridge and structural inspections with colleagues and also assisted in the preparation and site supervision of Capital & Revenue schemes to works on the asset stock.
