Myanmar

I led the CARE International Myanmar country programme from 2019 to 2022. During this time, we experienced the global pandemic, a military coup, but I am proud to say that the excellent team maintained most programmes. Due to the changing environment, development projects were redirected to nexus and humanitarian activities, with an even greater emphasis on working with national partner organisations.

I was contracted to investigate ethics complaints made, as well as to review and recommend strengthening of procurement systems in Turkey and for procurement for Syria programmes.

I prepared a guide manual for field offices on funding and managing financial contributions to security functions to minimise demands on organisational own funds.

I worked with selected country offices to document best practices in PSHEA, and prepared a field guide and series of guidance documents for country offices to implement best practices in PSHEA.

Afghanistan

Leading a national team of over 400 staff, working in seven provinces of Afghanistan, the CARE program delivers programs in education, governance, maternal health and emergency response. We work both directly and through local and international NGO partners.

I worked as Country Representative of CARE International Kurdistan region of Iraq, working with the CARE team and national partners to deliver impactful WASH and health projects in IDP camps and host communities.

Working with CARE Pakistan Senior Partnership Adviser and Country Director, I reviewed and edited a partnership framework model for CARE Pakistan to refine concepts, impact model and implementation strategy.

Working with the CARE Pakistan emergency and senior management teams, I developed a project design for emergency response in Khyber Paktunkhwa province of Pakistan. Design involved meeting with proposed implementing partners, researching baseline data, developing proposal and preparing final project proposal.

I am very experienced in humanitarian response management, emergency preparedness, resilience building. I also offer expertise in programme design and evaluation, including proposal writing and leading change management processes. I am also experienced and available for development programme management.

Freetwon, Sierra Leone

Humanitarian Adviser, DfID Sierra Leone, Ebola Response ProgrammeAugust 2015 – December 2015Contracted through Crown Agents, I was posted as a DfID Humanitarian Adviser to the western area ebola response centre in Freetown, Sierra Leone. In this role I supported the programme in its efforts to eradicate ebola from Freetown and its environs. In particular, I worked with partners including the Government of Sierra Leone to ensure that both the ‘surge’ to finally prevent any new outbreaks was successful, but also to build capacity within Sierra Leonian institutions to be prepared for possible future outbreaks.

I am responsible for strategic planning, programme development and programme implementation for CARE Kenya. Sectors I manage include financial inclusion, emergency/humanitarian response, refugee assistance, rural WASH, climate change, agricultural value chains. All of our programmes are focused on women and girls empowerment, and include conflict sensitivity, accountability systems and do no harm principles.I am active member of the ASAL Alliance and other coordinating and advocacy networks. I have taken a lead within CARE Kenya on improving the systems and culture of knowledge management within the programme.Achievements:• I have led continuing strategy development for the CARE Kenya programme, including effective collaboration and cooperation with Government of Kenya. During my time in the programme we have refined our focus and developed a long term plan that aligns to headquarters strategy as well as the government of Kenya’s strategic priorities.• I have led the integration of gender sensitive programming, and ensured all programmes are conflict-sensitive.• Led the country programme in developing and implementing advocacy strategies to advance programme objectives.• Tripled annual programme funding through fund raising team leadership over a three year period.

Nairobi And Juba

This temporary assignment was to support the south Sudan country programme as they responded to the humanitarian crisis in south Sudan. I was working with the senior management team to analyse and address areas of stress in strategy, operational structures and programme quality. I worked closely with the wider humanitarian team with CARE international as well as international donors.

I was responsible for leading all emergency preparedness and response for Somalia, including a $93 million food program, and an additional $7-8 million p.a. in other emergency response including water and sanitation, NFI and market recovery programs. The emergency program included significant sub granting (more than $1million in individual sub awards) to both international and local NGOs.. I was an active member of the Somalia NGO consortium. I worked closely with the UN system as well as maintaining cooperation with the Government of Somaliland. Both the food distribution programme and the other emergency interventions worked with local Somali NGOs as partners.My post was based in Nairobi, Kenya for security reasons, and so I managed a geographically dispersed team within Somalia as well as other staff based in Nairobi.

I managed the programme in south Sudan which included a large USAID funded education programme, rural WASH and food security programmes, and a health programme. The programme was transitioning from a conflict/humanitarian response programme to one focused on building capacity of local partners (CSO and Government) in south Sudan.My post was Nairobi-based, and my direct reports were mostly based in South Sudan. Combined with the ongoing civil war/struggle for independence, this added significant complexity to programme management.

I started with Save the Children South Sudan as head of finance and administration, but then moved into programme management. As head of finance and administration I was responsible for the finance, logistics, procurement, communications and security functions of the country programme. I then moved into the deputy director role, focusing on strategic programme development and programme implementation. The programme operated from Kenya into south Sudan, which was embroiled in a civil war. The programme focused on food security, education and health.

Ensure programme strategy for South Sudan programme focuses on enhancing lives of children; Oversee implementation of programme; Liaison with donors to the programme; ensure programmatic team has balance for diversity and gender.

Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania

I was responsible for the finance and administration (logistics, procurement, admin, audit) functions of the IFRC delegation in Tanzania during the Rwanda refugee crisis following the genocide in Rwanda in May 1994. I also provided support to the Tanzanian Red Cross Society development programmes in the country. As the head of delegation was based in Ngara, near the refugee camps, my other role was to represent the IFRC to the TRCS, donors and host Government.

Zomba, Malawi

I was the project manager for an emergency drought monitoring project working with the University of Malawi centre for social research. Apart from managing the research project, I wrote and managed a computer system to rapidly collate and analyse data from site across Malawi every month, and produced a monitoring report to the UN system and the Government to monitor the impact of food aid in different districts and for different age groups of children.At the end of the project I worked with a PhD student to analyse the factors affecting child malnutrition in Malawi.

I worked as a UN volunteer and was posted to UNICEF Burma programme. I provided capacity building/training to the UNICEF staff in all matters of IT. I also worked with the Burmese Central Medical Stores department to develop a computerized stock management system including expiry date monitoring, stock reports and reorder levels.

I was posted as a VSO volunteer to Omdurman Ahlia University. I lectured in business computing and also worked on curriculum development for the Bachelors degree in computing, including inclusion of business case studies and other business/professional courrse content to improve the degree relevance to students. I was evacuated by VSO when the first Gulf war broke out.
