In 1995, Gary Smith made a transition from the corporate world as VP of Physician Recruitment, and turned his life's passion – surfing - into his new profession. He opened Corolla Surf Shop and Surf School in 1996, as President and CEO of Corolla Surf Shop Corporation. In August 2010, Corolla Surf School was featured in the New York Times Travel Section. Corolla Surf School teaches 2000 students a year. Corolla Surf Shop has become the dominate surf shop on the Outer Banks. After graduating from Old Dominion University in 1995 with a BS in Secondary Education, Gary, when not touring as a drummer, worked in his family's construction business till 1981 when he entered the financial/banking industry. In 1984, he passed the Series 7 General Securities Exam and received Stock Brokerage License. 1995, he took his corporate sales experience and became an executive recruiter. His job was to hire senior-level C3I top-secret telecommunications engineers for the DOD. 1986, he transferred to health care recruitment and hired Physicians, Hospital Administrators, and Senior Corporate Management. By 1994 he became Vice President of Physician Recruitment. Gary's proudest achievement came in 1982. Gary produced and engineered the song “Settle Down” by Laurie Hyde Smith (Gary's wife), which won the 1982 Mid-Atlantic Songwriters Competition (Washington Area Music Awards). “Me & Willie,” also produced and engineered by Gary and written by Laurie, was recorded & released by EmmyLou Harris’ CD version of her Grammy Award winning album, “Luxury Liner”. Gary is a six-time qualifier of the Eastern Association Surfing Championships, has competed in the East Coast Surfing Championships, and is currently a competitor in the Atlantic Surfing Association. He just completed a 3 year term as Board Member for the Currituck Chamber of Commerce.
