Scorpion Networks Ltd are a start-up based in Maynooth University,Ireland. They work on EU funded projects to make healthcare and security electronic devices. I worked on a EU funded portable CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiation, Nuclear, Explosive) detector project. The individual detectors were made by the other partners in the project. Scorpion Networks was responsible for the wireless and power area of the project. The project ended in March 2016 after a 6 month extension with a successful test on a shipping container.My responsibility was the power module which comprised of 3 boards stacked on top of each other due to a limited amount of space in the device. My role was as follows:• Researching and designing solutions using Eagle PCB for a portable CBRNE detector power module which included • Power Board containing DC/DC and DC/AC switch mode power supplies with low output noise • Charging Board containing a charging chip that charged and selected between 2 10Ahr li-ion batteries • Microcontroller Board that controlled the power module • Fuel Gauge: Read battery current and voltage using I2C • Charging Chip: Send charging and select a battery commands using SPI • Board Assembly: Soldering Surface Mount down to 0402,0805 size • Hardware Debugging and Testing using Lab Equipment: Power Supplies, Oscilloscope, Signal Generator• Programmed PIC microcontrollers, PIC18F (8-bit)/PIC24 F(16-bit) in C• Coordinated with PCB and component vendors to achieve aggressive BOM targets within strict power and noise requirements while also designing boards based on the vendors DRC rules• Giving regular progress report presentations to the project partners making the sensors• Writing documentation for submission to European Union Funding Commission
