I am the survey department at I.E.C. We have a lot of engineers so at times I have to prioritize which of their projects to work on. Being the Otay Water District Surveyor was great experience for my present position. I.E.C. is a design consultant to public agencies in Southern California for water and wastewater projects. I do the design topo and right of way surveying for the plans. Most jobs I can do alone with GPS or a robotic total station. Ocasionally I have to draft another I.E.C. employee to give me a hand. I've been using an engineering tech to do my CAD work when when the field part of the project is too large. Otherwise I'm pretty good with AutoCAD Civil 3D. I do my own construction calculations, right of way mapping for the topos and plats for legal descriptions.

A big part of my job at Otay was to oversee the USA (Underground Service Alert) mark outs. When a contractor is going to excavate for something, for example a trench for fiber optic cable, they call USA and USA notifies the the local agencies i.e. the city public works department, the electric and phone companies, water and sewer providers, etc to mark the location of their pipes and cables so the contractor knows what to expect when they dig. It's a big responsibility because if something is not marked or marked in the wrong place, it could be a disaster to hit one of those pipes or cables. Fortunately, I had an employee who knew the location of most of OWD's pipes from his years of working there. When I had to cover for him, I had to go out with a set of as-built plans and it took me a long time at each site. I was always up against the clock. We had 2 business days to respond to a mark-out request, to get our stuff marked. If the contractor hits a facility that is marked, he pays for the repair. If it's not marked or marked wrong, the utility itself is responsible for the damage. That runs into thousands of dollars real quick to fix the pipe or cable and any collateral damage. If a water line gets hit, a lot of flood damage can occur before a valve can be located to shut it off. I did not miss mark-outs when I left the water district for a job with I.E.C.

This was the job that gave me the knowledge and experience to get licensed. I worked in Fallbrook a lot. I did surveys for property boundary and topography on many avocado and orange groves that got subdivided into estate lots for high-end homes. I often did the construction staking for the earthwork, roads and utilities.
