Gary Samowitz was the CEO of Stand Up (formerly Jewish Aid) which is an organisation focused on mobilising the Australian Jewish community to become active in pursuing social justice causes in the wider community. In the past few years Stand Up has:- raised over $1.5 million for emergency relief efforts ($450 000 for bushfires, $140 000 for the recent Australian Floods, etc...)- empowered newly arrived refugees from Darfur (Sudan) by coordinating a range of capacity building programs, including a homework club, mens group, womens group and employment program. - engaged with 3 Aboriginal communities (Toomelah + Boggabilla, and Cummeragunja) by taking 15 Jewish university students to run school holiday programs for the Aboriginal children every school holidays for the last 14 years.- facilitated social justice education workshops at all the major Jewish schools and youth movements in Melbourne & Sydney. Created a 6 month social impact leadership course for young adults. Stand Up has grown swiftly over the last few years. The organisation now employs 18 people, has over 70 volunteers a week, and opened an office in Sydney in 2012. Gary has also been responsible for all fundraising, and successfully hit the fundraising target every year for the last 10 years.
