PROFESSIONAL HISTORYGary Sergy has 33 continuous years experience in ‘oil-on-shoreline’ multi-disciplinary science, spill preparedness and response. Between 1979 and 2008 he managed the federal program of applied studies on this subject matter. In 2009, he launched S3 Environmental Inc. located in western Canada. Gary is responsible for development of foundation knowledge on oil-on-shoreline fate, behaviour and persistence, natural removal process, cleanup criteria, and the effects and effectiveness of shoreline cleanup techniques. He has developed guidance, protocols and standards on best response practices, cleanup criteria and is one of the original architects of SCAT (Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Technique). He has managed a wide variety of projects, desktop,lab, meso-scale and field investigations, experimental oil spill projects, post spill monitoring and has participated as technical advisor in various international and national oil spill incidents, beginning with the 1989 Exxon Valdez and last with the 2010 Deepwater Horizon rig spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
