About Gary Sims
Thirty-six+ years in fire protection. I started with Grinnell Fire Protection in January of 1988 as a designer in Little Rock, Arkansas. I began my career preparing design fabrication & installation drawings by hand, using a drafting table equipped with a parallel bar and triangles. I soon took-on stock-listing and material procurement responsibilities. We moved-on to CAD platforms and I thrived with that technology. After ten years in Little Rock, I transferred to Cleveland, Ohio to work for SimplexGrinnell's International Operations Group, where we worked on large, complex projects. Much of the work was special hazards applications associated with power plants and petrochemical projects, but we also worked on US embassies and trans-oceanic cable stations, among other large scale domestic projects. In 2003 I was approached by a SimplexGrinnell regional manager to apply for the district design manager position in the Cleveland, Ohio district office; I did and was the successful candidate. I worked in that role for three years, before my wife and I decided to move back to our home state of Arkansas to be closer to our aging parents and extended families. I worked for a small local fire protection company in northwest Arkansas before leaving the fire protection contracting industry and moving into the consulting engineering industry with Bernhard, LLC, where I worked for almost fourteen years. Now, at Cromwell Architects Engineers, I still perform fire protection design duties, prepare specifications, review submittals and perform Construction Administration duties as needed.
