I was part of a project team to set up a new shared service centre from scratch and on time, incorporating credit control, accounting, accounts payable and HR functions. I moved from Glasgow to San Jose as the Site Lead where I oversaw the recruitment of a team of over 300.Key successes have included recruiting the initial team of 200 plus staff in only 6 months, developing a motivational culture based on an open leadership style and excellent career development. I also introduced skip level meetings amongst a large workforce to optimise job performance and satisfaction.Other achievements include driving an ongoing process of continuing improvement by working with Practical Process Improvement (PPI) methodology and various system implementations.

I was responsible for the Order to Cash (EMEA and North America) and Procure to Pay teams (EMEA), for the Life Technologies brand of Thermo Fisher Scientific.During this time, the team achieved many awards for high performance, including 3 awards in 2013 from Credit Collection and Risk magazine. In addition, I virtually eliminated the issue of employee attrition, developing the careers of capable individuals so that 10% of the workforce progressed into more senior roles internally – including a replacement for my own.I also introduced a new collections system that reduced overdue debt by 10% and Days Sales Outstanding (DSO) by 4-5 days.

I led the credit control and revenue control team for this international law firm, ensuring bills were paid on time through a credible, customer focused and relationship centred approach.Key achievements included that I educated and empowered partners on the importance of cash flow, generating valuable data on financial performance for the first time to drive behavioural changes. In fact, I developed credibility and influence that led to collaborating with a partner in each office to reduce debt.I reduced overdue debt by £80m in April 2008, a record breaking level of debt collection, automated many collections processes and achieved year end KPI’s for Lockup (work in progress plus debtor days) in 2010, including a record breaking 47 debtor days for the Real Estate Group.

In this position, I managed 150 staff and collections of £1.6b with accountability for credit control, accounts receivable and billing before being required to establish a new Shared Services centre in Bulgaria for this leading recruitment firm.I was instrumental in all aspects of setting up the Shared Services centre, from site selection and build to recruitment of a 100 strong team and introduction of a new collections system. I also developed all relevant standard operating processes, training and mentoring staff to build a highly motivated and empowered team. This enabled me to develop many careers to new heights.In addition, I minimised bad debt to 0.1% in 2006 (the lowest ever figure); acknowledged as a fantastic achievement by company auditors and as DSO Champion, I shared best practice in credit control with Adecco operations in South Africa, India, USA, Eastern and Western Europe, as well as head office in Zurich.

I established a new Shared Service Centre with 25 staff for this temporary medical recruitment agency, with 5 Group Companies.Successes included the implementation of a common method for opening accounts across the 5 companies and I simplified various systems covering ERP, collections, timesheets and invoicing.
