About Gary Thomason
Mr. Gary “Grinch” Thomason, teaches in the Naval Postgraduate School’s Space Systems Academic Group as the sponsored Space Systems Engineering and Acquisitions Chair and Lecturer educating the next generation of Space-enabled Warfighters. In past positions including at the US Army’s Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC) as the Marine Corps Space Operations Liaison and SMDC’s Military Deputy Director for Strategy and Plans, he was an original planning team member of Task Force - Sierra to re-establish US Space Command and is considered a founding member of the Space Forces for helping plan the new service and service components' creation. He previously consulted with the United States Military Training Mission (USMTM) Transformation Action Group to Saudi Arabia - a unique security assistance (SA) and security cooperation (SC) organization under the authority of the chief of the U.S. diplomatic mission – on US Government recommendation to the Ministry of Defense for development of a new Royal Saudi Space Force. Other experiences include positions at MCAS Iwakuni as Chief of Staff / Executive Officer managing program costs up to $4.5 Billion executing $3 Million/day in construction, and the National Reconnaissance Office, where he was the USMC Service Chief Representative in the User Engagement Office. Additionally during his tenure at the NRO roles included: NRO Field Representative to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, J39; combat deployment as NRO Field Representative with Joint Special Operations Command; and Field Representative to the Joint Inter-Agency Task Force – National Capital Region and as the USMC Service Chief Fellow to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Mr. Thomason has been a member of the Marine Corps Gazette Editorial Panel since 2006. He remains an organizational Educator and Leader with a unique history of overcoming complex, emerging organizational problems in technically complex fields and developing actionable institutional solutions routinely translating corporate vision into tangible, real-time results through effective strategy, executable plans, resource deployment, and organizational performance; extensive history of driving change and achieving unparalleled organizational success.
