About Gary Townsend

Gary Townsend is a Partner at Englander Knabe & Allen. Active in politics since the 1960s, Gary has keen understanding and unique expertise in government affairs and strategic communications.From 1990 to 2011, Gary served as Chief Deputy to the last four Los Angeles County Assessors. As Chief Deputy Assessor, Gary helped oversee the largest assessment jurisdiction in the nation and an assessment roll of over one trillion dollars. His focus was communications and legislative affairs. His key responsibilities included working closely with the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors as well as with the State Legislature, the Franchise Tax Board and Board of Equalization members and staffs. Prior to working in the Los Angeles County Assessor’s Office, Gary served as District Director for Congressman Matthew Martinez and Chief Deputy to Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Woo. He has also managed and participated in a variety of state, national, and local political high-profile campaigns where his personal insight and enthusiasm helped bring success to his clients and causes.Gary attended California State University at Los Angeles where he was Student Body President and a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He earned a Political Science Bachelor of Arts degree from the University in 1969 and later became President of the Alumni Association for a period. In 2004, the California State University at Los Angeles’ Alumni Association honored Gary with the University Service Award. Gary has been an active member of IAAO for over 19 years and presently serves on the Member Recognition Committee.Gary is active in numerous charitable endeavors, including serving on the Board of Directors for First Tee of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County Junior Golf Foundation, and the “Advot” Project. Gary resides in Los Angeles with his wife and enjoys reading and playing golf.
