Royal Naval Air Station, Yeovilton

Leading and Managing a team of 90 Logisticians (military, civil servants and contractors) enabling global war fighting aviation capability through a busy supply chain who operate 24/7. The Logistics Operations (Log Ops) department are the Operational Logistics lead for the Fleet Air Arm on station including Merlin and Wildcat assets for the RN, Commando Helicopter Force, Wildcat Maritime Force and Army Air Corps elements.

Senior Officer and manager of over 30 Logisticians on a Type-23 Warship with c220 people, deployed globally on Operations. HMS ARGYLL spent most of the first COVID-19 pandemic lockdown deployed in the Middle East. With a limited airbridge available and strict quarantine/self-isolation routines in place in Bahrain, the Logistics Department worked tirelessly to ensure personnel moves, end to end supply chain for critical spares, catering re-supply and crucial medical supplies all arrived in a timely manner to keep the Ship on Operations.o Responsible for overseeing management of sub-departments for: HR, pay and allowances; supply chain; catering services and civilian contractors (laundry and shop).o Officer in Medical Charge and ordering/accounting of controlled/accountable drugs.o Affiliates’ officer co-ordinating outreach/PR initiatives with company affiliates.

Includes: Hard FM Infrastructure management and planning including finance and liaison on the NGEC contract associated outputs; Soft FM contract management of the HESTIA contract including Catering / Retail / Leisure; Cleaning; Accommodation Management; Mess / House Management; Site Services; Building Management; Pay / Personnel Services; Naval Stores; Motor Transport; Personal Assistants; iHub Services; Medical and Clerical Admin; Public Relations and Reprographics; Bass Access Control and all other tier 1 and tier 2 facilities. In addition, budget management, stock control, procurement and daily staff / contractor liaison at all levels.Gary moved back home to the West Country in October 2016 to run contracts for all Logistics output (Soft Facilities Management) for a 239 acre site at HMS Raleigh in Torpoint and was promoted to Lieutenant Commander.

Running Defence’s Strategic Sealift assets (four RORO vessels under a £1Bn PFI with Foreland Shipping).Responsible for financial management and administration of the strategic Roll-On Roll-Off vessel PFI contract, worth £1Bn (£50M per annum). Innovation ideas introduced saved £30M over the life on this contract. Planning to Operational objectives and Defence Exercise Programme; sustainment overseas interests (Falklands, Ascension Islands, Gibraltar and Cyprus) and contingency. Financial management; fuel management and ordering; diplomatic clearances; port visits; income generation; ammunition load planning and contract management.Here, he delivered the pivotal redeployment of mission-critical equipment from Afghanistan, sustaining Overseas Bases and supporting exercise programmes worldwide. Responsible for financial management and administration of the strategic Roll-On Roll-Off vessel PFI contract, worth £1Bn (£50M per annum), the approach he introduced will save more than £30M in contract fees. He worked with key stakeholders to create new communications to support the Sierra Leone Ebola mission and, elsewhere, he was the vital link between Coastguard and shore, coordinating a rescue effort which saved the lives of 150 Syrian refugees. For this he was recognised by the 2nd Sea Lord (Vice Admiral) and the Worshipful Company of Carmen, London, by being awarded the 2015 Carmen’s Royal Navy Cup. He was presented this by Her Royal Highness the Princess Anne at the annual awards ceremony along with an honorary freeman of the livery company for 5 years (Capt. N.A. Barningham, Master, ANVIL POINT (Foreland Shipping) was awarded the Merchant Navy Meritorious Service Medal for the rescue of 150 refugees from a vessel in distress, in force 8 conditions, Mediterranean Sea off Malta, 28th to 30th November, 2014).

SO3 Media Ops Officer to UKMCC. Assistant Public Affairs Officer to Combined Maritime Forces. Kingdom of Bahrain, just after the start of the Arab Spring - one of the few Western media in country.In 2011, Gary deployed on another Op Tour as the Deputy Media Operations Officer to the United Kingdom Maritime Component Commander (UKMCC) and Assistant Public Affairs Officer to Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), both based in Bahrain.

Rnas Yeovilton

845 Naval Air Squadron, Commando Helicopter Force.Having travelled all over the world with the RMBS, Gary transferred to the Royal Navy as a Logistics Officer in January 2009. Following initial officer training at BRNC he undertook Initial Logistics Officer Course (ILOC) at HMS Raleigh. Following ILOC he served as the Logistics Officer to 845 Naval Air Squadron, Commando Helicopter Force (CHF), at RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset. This included an Operational deployment to Afghanistan with Joint Helicopter Force JHF(A).

Afghanistan

HERRICK 13. Camp Bastion, Helmand. Ground Operations in Afghanistan for Operation Herrick 13 serving with 845 Naval Air Squadron, Commando Helicopter Force (CHF) under joint helicopter force (JHF(A)). Primary role was SO3 J4 Infra, managing rotary flight line infrastructure including a £10M chinook hanger and landing area project.

Hms Iron Duke, Carribean

Type-23 Frigate, HMS IRON DUKE in the Caribbean where the Ship had the biggest single drugs bust in the Royal Navy’s history (5.5 Tonnes / £240m of Cocaine). Counter-Narcotics, International Relations, Disaster Relief Operations and reassurance / protection of our overseas territories.

Gary Turner was born in Lancashire. Having played the drums and trombone since the age of 12, he joined the Royal Marines Band Service (RMBS) as a percussionist in September 1992 and on completion of his initial training, he qualified with a Licentiate Diploma in percussion teaching from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London. His first assignment saw him serve with the Staff Band of the Royal Marines School of Music, Deal (RMSM) until its closure in 1996 when Gary moved to Dartmouth in Devon and served nine years with the Band of HM Royal Marines Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC), followed by a further four years with the Band of HM Royal Marines Plymouth, based at HMS Raleigh. During his time in the RMBS he embarked on HMS INVINCIBLE, RFA ARGUS and HMS ALBION in addition to serving on Op Fresco (the fire service union strike) in 2002/3 and in Basrah, Iraq in 2007
