In my current role as the executive responsible for Enterprise Capture Management at SAIC' Defense and Civilian sector, I lead an amazing team of professionals who have achieved significant results solving complex problems for our clients. The success I achieved throughout my career is rooted in the values I learned from my first boss – my Dad. Dad owned an auto repair business where I started working after school and was given the job of sweeping. I thought I should be in charge of something important like sitting in the air conditioning and talking to people but I soon learned every job is important. If you paint a car in a dirty shop, dirt gets under the paint and you have to repaint so you do not make any money. Your role in any organization is to serve. If you are not helping your organization meet their goals they will not be motivated to reward you.Next I learned that attitude and work ethic are extremely important. If you want a better job, you need to be positive so people want to work with you. You also need to work hard because if you don’t do your current job with passion, why would anyone want to give you a better or more impactful job? To continue to grow, it is important to identify ways to work smarter so you can finish the sweeping faster, have more time to learn the next skill and move up to washing cars! The most important things learned as I grew up in the business were subtle. Before you can lead a team or a client to success, you must build the trust and respect from the people you interact with every day. It is important to always remember that our clients and our teams are people first. While our day to day jobs are generally spent with our coworkers, it is the client who determines our success and focusing on client needs to be at the center of everything we do.I learned many other things in that small business that I still apply every day.
