Since 1993, Gary has worked with the founders, trustees, and fellow staff of the Vermont Studio Center (VSC) to create an artists residency program in the Green Mountain village of Johnson, Vermont. Guided by his love of poetry and painting, northern New England, and community, Gary helped establish VSC as a premier retreat for artists and writers worldwide, one dedicated to providing the time, space, fellowship, and daily way of life conducive to creative work. Gary began his VSC tenure as a member of the live-in support staff, grew to direct the Development and Writing Programs for many years, and served as VSC President from 2013 to 2019. As VSC President, Gary’s leadership included his role as guardian of mission and spirit, cultivating a committed board of trustees, major gift fundraising and campaigns, extensive alumni and donor travel and events, the creation of the VSC Campus Master Plan, overseeing financial growth, stewarding community inclusiveness and welfare, and connecting the numerous interests within VSC to a shared vision. Having committed nearly three decades to Vermont Studio Center, Gary is now open to opportunity in his other interest areas, including north woods conservation, editing, clean rivers, music, mental health, schools, young people, and end of life rights.
