I manage in-gallery and online digital interpretation efforts for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.

I've helped a broad range of clients think through technical and strategic issues around content strategy, product development, online community, and social media. Past clients have included NPR West, the USC Race and Equity Center, Bidoun Projects, and others. I also provide a range of ongoing professional and editorial services to long-term clients. I won a competitive bid to become the lead product manager and editorial strategist on the 2017 redesign of caamuseum.org, the website of the California African American Museum. After developing a suite of new page and editorial types for the museum, including a new exhibition page format, I became the site's primary manager and editor.

My first editorial gig was as the Minority Writing Fellow at the Village Voice. Since then I've written hundreds of articles on identity, film, television, books, video games, politics, and new media for Bidoun, National Public Radio, Essence, Interview, Lacanian Ink, The Root.com, and other print and online publications. I also had my first piece of fiction published, with more to come.In 2010, my Bidoun essay “The Aloha President” was recognized as a notable essay in that year's edition of Best American Essays.

I was charged with thinking through how the Academy Museum's digital platforms—our app and website—might be used as fully-fledged curatorial spaces. Projects I led included the creation of our audio tours, web and app exhibition pages, the creation of the award-winning Academy Awards History Timeline, the development and launch of the Hollywood Past & Present app experience (which allows users to parse Los Angeles from the standpoint of film history), the award-winning Regeneration Website, and traditional web editorial in support of the museum's exhibitions and collections. I also did a fair amount of long-form writing for the site, as a way to help set the tone for it and our app.

I'm an intermittent Lecturer in English at LMU's Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts, where I've taught Journalism and New Media, Reviewing the Arts and the journalism major's digital capstone course, where graduating seniors pursue semester-long projects. In Fall 2017, I created and taught the first installment of a course on the history of ethnic media in Los Angeles. I was one of the first faculty advisors for LMU's student chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists.

I led digital and print storytelling efforts for one of the nation’s leading undergraduate and graduate journalism and communication schools. I also led the effort to rebuild Annenberg's web infrastructure, relaunching annenberg.usc.edu so that it better reflected the school's programmatic ambitions and its varied communities of practice. Traffic to the new site increased across the board, while traffic to the Journalism M.S. area I relaunched increased 18,000% in the new site's first year. (You read that right!)

Repeatedly recognized for delivery of innovative digital content through promotion and assignment of critical, start-up-style initiatives. As Vice President, Digital, I managed all aspects of KCETLink's digital operations, as well as the associated creative, development and product teams in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Products that fell under my purview included KCET.org, LinkTV.org, Link World News (news.linktv.org), and the LinkTV iOS and Android apps. I also launched KCET and LinkTV's streaming video portals.

Managed digital and new media operations for KCET, the nation's largest independent public television station. Introduced new storytelling formats such as show recaps, geo-located video content, and election explainers that increased site visitors by 245%, this as broadcast ratings declined. Launched the KCET Food subscription vertical.

Created, edited, or top-edited all editorial and seasonal packages for KCET.org, including “Departures: Highland Park,” an immersive, community storytelling experience. Primary strategist and information architect on the 5/10 re-launch of KCET.org.

Repeatedly recognized for exceptional performance through fast-track promotions.As Director, AOL African American Programming Group and Founding Editor-in-Chief, AOL Black Voices, I was primary content strategist and information architect on the launch of AOL Black Voices, the first AOL brand offered outside the dial-up “Walled Garden.” Managed acquisition of BlackVoices.com from the Tribune Company. Launched the “Black Focus” Welcome screen within the dial-up AOL product. Set editorial direction and business strategy for the African American category across all AOL businesses.

I joined Africana.com, a daily updating website focusing on the art, politics, and culture of the African Diaspora, as Editor-in-Chief and eventually became General Manager.As GM, I oversaw all editorial, community, marketing, sales, and technical operations. As EIC, I assigned, edited, and top-edited articles across all all sections. I was lead strategist on the 2003 re-launch of the site, which introduced new blogging, multimedia, and community features and moved Africana from #8 on CommScore’s African American rankings to #4. Created and wrote “The Africana A-List” news roundup, which became the site’s most-read feature.

The bulk of my post-college years were spent writing film reviews for the Village Voice in New York City. It was a pretty good time!

In 1999, I took a job as a section editor at a then-fledgling site called BlackPlanet, and would eventually become charged with managing the site's day-to-day editorial, sales integration, technical integration, and community operations. When I left BP the site was (and remained for many years) the world's most visited African American web brand. It was a thrilling, transforming experience.
