Building upon my previous summer’s research, I investigated the role of a special phase of matter, Bose-Einstein condensation, as a medium for the storage and manipulation of quantum information. Specifically, the extension of Grover’s search algorithm to a system of high dimensionality. This necessitated a broad spectrum of knowledge: ranging from a solid grasp of Quantum Mechanics through to a sizeable amount of computer science.

My placement concerned the study of Quantum Information Theory. Initially, familiarising myself with the nomenclature commonplace within Quantum Mechanics, before advancing onto calculations involving entanglement. Self-motivation and good organizational skills were essential for this post due to the flexible working hours and relaxed supervision.

During my summer holidays I undertook the task of upgrading an existing client database. I was given sole responsibility over the project and worked independently whilst the company continued to operate. Often unsupervised, I demonstrated my diligence and determination to the task by exceeding their expected time scale, as well as having to make impromptu discussions with potential clients.

As a branch assistant my main responsibilities included cashiering, offering investment advice and selling investment products. I thrived in this busy, rewarding job and thoroughly enjoyed working in a highly motivated team. I quickly learnt how to develop a rapport with both my colleagues and the customers, receiving full marks on a customer satisfaction test. I was well respected and trusted, occasionally having sole branch responsibility.
