About Gary Hawken Cbo

I have over 34 years of building and safety experience in the construction industry and in city government. 15 + of those years in the Southern California area as a Building Official. I was the Building Official for the City of Aliso Viejo for 4 years and for the City of Laguna Niguel for 10 years. I am a Certified Building Official, Plans Examiner, Senior Combination Building Inspector, and International Code Enforcement Administrator. In addition, I provide administrative support for the city building department. My experience includes supervising building department staff on structural and MEPs inspections, plan reviews, and permit issuance for projects totaling over $886 million in valuation within the last ten years.In the first year of the 10 years with the City of Laguna Niguel, I personally took the City from an ISO (Insurance Service Office) rating of 9 (10 being the lowest mark) to a rating of 2. Only 2 cities in California have ever received a rating of 1. The ISO assesses each community on a scale of 1 to 10 with regards to the administration and enforcement of the building codes and mitigation of losses from natural hazards. The lower the city’s rating number, the lower the insurance costs. This rating illustrates my commitment to mitigating losses and enforcing codes to improve safety in our community.I also obtained an ISO rating of two for over 18 California clients of Charles Abbott Associates. This makes Charles Abbott Associates the only company of their type in California to have an ISO rating. This rating for CAA’s clients again illustrates my commitment to mitigating losses and enforcing codes. The lower the ISO rating the less insurance costs are for business and homeowners.
