My greatest challenge and a role in which I excelled, I was promoted to lead the 65-person department through a particularly challenging period. The foundations of my current career were established in the Royal Navy as an Aircraft Engineer, where I held various positions and rose to the ranks of Chief Petty Officer. Positions included Aircraft Accident Investigator, Licenced Aircraft Maintenance Engineer and Aircraft Recovery Officer. As Aircraft Accident Investigator and Aircraft Recovery Officer, I was always on call and found myself travelling at very short notice to locations as diverse at Kenya, the US and Croatia - often in highly volatile and sometimes hostile environments. These operations - managing the delicate balance between evidence preservation and environmental protection, while minimising public disruption - paved the way for my career beyond the Navy, and required the same exacting leadership, management, precision and thorough analysis as my more recent roles.
