At InteractiveTel we like to say we are going to Mars. It's a concept used as a device to align our organization with a common mission and focus. I have distributed "Failure is Not An Option", by Gene Franz, to managers and leadership as it details the Mercury and Apollo Missions. Included in the book are detailed descriptions of how NASA went from no space program of note to putting a man on the moon.By large and by far they made it up as they went along because they were the first. There was no precedent or best practices, just trial by fire. Mistakes were made. Lesson's were learned. One of the first chapters about the "Four Inch Flight" hints at the challenges faced during our space program. Innovation draws several parallels in the experiences related to disruption and blue ocean strategies.We chose Mars because man hasn't been there. Because you can't see it with the naked eye. You have you reach beyond what you can see to what you know in your heart and mind is there. We have folks in the shuttle, for sure. But the most important people are in mission control. They are the true heroes. We are on our way to Mars and we will get there and back because the highly competent overachievers who work with us care enough to see to it.
