About Gary Strang

Gary Strang is Principal of GLS Landscape/Architecture in San Francisco, where for the past 30 years, he has focused on the design of contemporary urban landscapes. Blurring the lines between disciplines, his team of architects and landscape architects designs places through collaborations that emerge from the integration of landscape, infrastructure and architecture. Notable projects include 2 acres of waterfront outdoor space for the Exploratorium at Piers 15 & 17, the New Stanford Hospital with Rafael Vinoly, the Haas School of Business expansion with Perkins & Will, Portola Plaza in Monterey with SOM and the unbuilt Berkeley Art Museum with Toyo Ito. Gary is a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects, a licensed architect, and currently serves as co-chair of the Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) Design Review Board and Stewardship Advisor to the Neutra Institute for Survival Through Design. He has served as a board member for the Center for Architecture and Design, taught at UC Berkeley and UC Davis, and exhibited work, lectured and published on issues of infrastructure and landscape.
