Zap Events is a themed events company in the UK. They deliver events for conferences and medium sized venues with a focus on room decorating. Having identified a gap in market for themed event props, I brought in more innovative and state of the art technology to take theming to the next level. My responsibilities included:• Managing complete themed events from props to table centres.• Negotiating contracts with both venues and DJs.• Directing the creation of art machinery for themed events.• Working with staff to create and provide individual lighting or sound items to run alongside the DJs.• Participating in all aspects of the event set-up and take-down.• Engaging in costuming to create a themed atmosphere.• Repairing any equipment prior to, during, or following the function.• Establishing a website as an online catalogue. • Developing a centrepiece collection which became a significant trademark for the company.With Zap Events I was hands-on and involved in all aspects of the business. I learned the nuts and bolts of the industry and saw a unique opportunity to increase both the efficiency and quality of the technology used in events. I have been able to carry this knowledge further in Table Art.

Having gained a significant amount of industry experience, I decided to grow my own business to perform in larger arenas. As the company grew I was able to compete with stations like BRMB, spinning extravagant disco shows. I further developed my business by: • Merging the music and a fully-themed event, such as a casino night.• Managing 10 DJs to work for the company.• Working with small and large venues, choosing the props and the best machinery to use.While I enjoyed the life and excitement of being a DJ, I wanted to spend more regular hours with my family. The desire to showcase my art for the benefit of larger groups of people led me to table centerpieces and an interest in innovative decor.

In my earliest job, at the age of 15, I assisted my father who was a promoter of public events. Being one of the first to run parties, roller disco and wrestling events with recorded music, it was exciting and educational to work with him. Over that period of time I developed the key skills and event management that I have brought with me into my business today. His lessons framed the customer service priorities that are at the heart of what I do. From my time with him I learned about:• Connecting with an audience and developing an empathy for their response. • Creating an atmosphere and experience that was designed specifically for the benefit of the attendees. • Anticipating and listening to the client needs to take their event to the next level.• Designing and developing the most efficient way to unpack items, resulting in the flat packing practice we employ today.• Having the solid reputation for always being on time and being ready for the event.• Learning the set up and running of audio equipment.• Learning how to create special effects with the available technology. • Setting up mirrors and turntables for parties to give the illusion of movement.• Being a DJ for 1,000 attendees and dancers with simultaneous projecting imagery.
