Gary Santos was elected to Mount Pleasant Town Council in 1996, re-elected in 2000, 2004 and 2013. He has enacted ordinances, resolutions and policies and approved annual budgets, capital improvement projects, the comprehensive plan, and the master plan for recreation. During his tenure on Town Council, Gary Santos attended more than 900 meetings and served as past chairman or member of most Committees of Council, including Personnel, Fire, Bids & Purchases, Budget, Economic Development Advisory Board, Public Services, Police, Judicial and Legal, Recreation, Planning, Transportation and Water Supply. He also served on the Blue Ribbon Committee on Growth in 1999. As a member of Mount Pleasant Town Council, Gary Santos helped commit $160 million in funding for capital projects in partnership with state and federal agencies. He was instrumental in the development of funding for more than $20 million in recreation capital projects and the implementation of over a dozen of new recreation programs.PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS:• Protecting Local Businesses. Drafted and sponsored Ordinance 97005: “Local Vendor Partnership Commitment.” This ordinance gives preference to local businesses entering into a partnership agreement and has allowed the Town to become the largest financial supporter of local businesses in Mount Pleasant.• Protecting the Environment. Sponsored Ordinance 08068: “Abandoned Watercraft.” Spearheaded an ordinance making it illegal to abandon watercrafts in the waterways and rivers in and around Mount Pleasant. • Protecting the Workplace. Drafted and sponsored Ordinance 07007: “Prohibition of Smoking in the Workplace.” This ordinance mandates that smoking tobacco products be prohibited in all work places in the Town of Mount Pleasant.• Protecting Freedom of Speech. Sponsored Ordinance 98048: “Public Comments to Council.” This ordinance allows a public comment period of up to 3 minutes at each Town Council meeting.
