My public-accounting career with Arthur Andersen spanned 22 years and four continents, taking me first to Miami, and then to Budapest, Caracas, and Seoul. These two years in South Korea were the result of my adventurous request for an assignment “anywhere in the world.” Here, I reviewed annual reports and registration statements filed with the US SEC, while also preparing and delivering technical training. I was also a member of the Andersen Business Audit methodology global implementation team. Before Seoul, I led the Audit Division – for the final three years, as Country Managing Partner ¬– during six years in Caracas, Venezuela. During my final year, I completed a merger with two other accounting firms, where I learned that executing a merger is even harder than negotiating the details. It was at this point in my accounting journey that I asked for an assignment “anywhere in the world.”Having learned after my initial 11-years in Miami that the most urgent need was for accountants and auditors in Central Europe, I accepted an assignment to run the Audit Division in Budapest, where new Arthur Andersen offices had opened. Since my father was born in a small village in Hungary, the assignment provided an opportunity to return to my roots. During three years in Hungary, I learned that policies and practices must adapt to the business environment and culture.During just over a decade in the Miami offices of Arthur Andersen, I supervised audits of branches of Spanish and Latin American banks as well as US SEC registrants. I enjoyed keeping colleagues up to date as a regular presenter of accounting and SEC rules training. Show less
