Before graduating from the Pratt Institute with his Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) Shaffer learned that he would be featured by Library Journal as one of 50 people shaping the future of libraries. This honor was attributed to the partnership he formed between the Brooklyn Public Library and author Dave Eggers' 826NYC. Shaffer's work continued on to partnerships between libraries and the Los Angeles Times, Starbucks, The Cherokee Nation, FINRA, and others. He has collaborated with colleagues to fundraise over $50 million for library capital projects and other library initiatives. Together he and his colleagues have won numerous awards. He speaks nationally and internationally on future-focused libraries and institutional triple-bottom-line sustainability. He is the author of three books, book chapters, and numerous articles. In addition to having served as a director of marketing for a library, he has served as director or CEO of libraries for 12 years. He has taught library management as a either a full-time or adjunct professor at the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business in a program he once directed. He is a past president of the California Library Association.
