Gary Toth’s passion for music started when he was coming of age as the 90’s grunge movement was beginning to take hold. At age 13, he quickly found a love of the electric guitar and would only put it down when he had to go to school or go to sleep. Meals would have been skipped if it weren’t for his parents’ persistence on getting him out of his room to come to dinner. High school was spent diving deeper into metal and progressive, then studying guitar virtuosos like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, John Petrucci, and Steve Morse. Finding himself performing and recording with an industrial band, Gary started to become intrigued by the possibilities of producing pro quality music in a simple home studio. That intrigue led Gary to pursue and complete a B.A. in Music Technology from Ball State University.Gary’s time at Ball State brought on a paradigm shift in his musical journey. The introduction of musique concrète (music created using recorded sound as source material) was eye opening and challenged his mainstream idea of what could be defined as music. Gary immersed himself in sound design and avant-garde composition in the same way he immersed himself in the guitar while in high school. Gary went on to cut his teeth with collaborative projects, scoring student short films and also getting selected for DISCUS - Digital Image and Sound Collaborative Urban Showcase, where his digital video/sound collaboration was performed live at the Indianapolis Artsgarden located above the intersection of Washington and Illinois streets in downtown Indianapolis.Gary has since found a passion for composing in the “Trailer Music” genre because of the way elements of songwriting and cinematic composition are blended, utilizing much of his musical background and skills. Gary is also passionate about teaching music and has been providing guitar instruction since the beginning of his college years and has continued, most recently at the Sweetwater Academy of Music within Sweetwater’s beautiful campus in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
