Beginning about 1984 I have passionately included writing as an important part of my professional work. I think it began with a usability test report I wrote when I worked as a quality assurance analyst for IBM in Raleigh, NC. A few months after the report's distribution ("publication" is too strong for an IBM Internal Use Only report), I was literally called into my manager, Bob Lasher's, office. There I was surprised to find his boss's boss, my third line manager (we were very hierarchical then), Norbert Seif, seated there. He shooed Bob out and proceeded to grill me about the report. Norbert's copy was highly annotated in his cursive. We went through the report page by page. He truly did not believe I wrote it until after I had answered his first barrage of questions, to his satisfaction. I received a cash award, peer recognition, and have been writing on the job (and off) ever since.
