About Gary Mitchell

What can you be the best at? What are you deeply passionate about? His research discovered an underpinning formula which he calls the hedgehog concept: doing one thing and doing it well, and it should also be the answer to those three questions. For me I have a passion for working with Wintel technologies, and more specifically I believe my strength lies in process analysis and the development of solution's to solve problems and improve efficiencies.As well as developing my technical Wintel background through my various roles in Citi, the experience has helped me recognize and strengthen competencies in emotional and social intelligence giving me the skills to engage with colleagues at all levels to deliver results. If I was to summarize my key strengths they would be:Personal Commitment: I believe strongly in loyalty and personal commitment to the team and life in Data Centre often demands putting in long hours outside of your normal 9 to 5 role usually without additional compensation.Analytical: By the very nature of being a support engineer for the majority of my career means I have an analytical and logical mind were I break problems down into their fundamental elements. Planning and Prioritisation: After listening to the talk David Allen gave at Citi I implemented his Getting Things Done methodology which dramatically improved my focus and clarity to manage the heavy workload in datacentre. Team Oriented: There has been considerable change in our team over the past year when it split in two as functions got realigned, we merged with our North American peers . I have been called upon due to my personable nature and positive outlook to make these transitions as smooth as possible helping orientate new colleagues and gain trust in the team building process.

    As a SME for GSDO I am responsible for the management and the processes which govern the largest volume of data hosted on NAS in both EMEA and North America for Citi. I'm currently working on several global projects such as Desktop Optimisation and Data Loss Prevention as well the development of new processes around NAS capacity management. Another crucial aspect of the role is working with peers to design and implement Global standards such as the Distributed File System (DFS) which will be a first in in EMEA and greatly reduce administration for data transfers. Recently I was appointed as deputy manager which sees me actively involved with the daily operational management of the team and participating and hosting management calls where required. This includes providing management updates on issues, metrics and workload of the team

    The primary function of this SME role was to provide remote hardware and Operating System (w2k-w2k8) support for several hundred HP Proliant servers(G2-G7) across 52 countries in EMEA. Our servers hosted multiple services including File, Print, Thinprint, SFTP, HPCA, McAfee AV, and Wyse client configuration which all required an awareness of the application for Continuity of Business testing. A deep technical understanding of the server operating environment was gained and evidenced by the resolution of challenging problems. One example was the diagnosis of seeming random blue screening server in Dublin, using debugging tools to analyse the calls in memory showed that an application on the server was causing the crashes. After contacting the vendor they were able to supply an update to remediate the issue. I would also be chosen for projects that required interaction with other teams, such as branch closures in London and the Nordics due to a strong sense of people and business awareness.
