Prior to completion of my General Psychiatry Residency and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship, I served in the United States Public Health Service, Commissioned Officers Association as a General Medical Officer. I was detailed to Indian Heath Service at the Cheyenne Arapahoe Clinic in Concho, OK (near OK City). I planned to apply to an Emergency Medicine Residency after completing my service obligation. While working as the only physician at the clinic, I was asked to implement a Children's Mental Health Program as part of the Well Child Program. There weren't any Psychiatrists to consult with, but with assistance of the clinic's Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Pharmacist, the program was successful. We were able to help lots of children and families and they were able to help me see what I truly wanted to do. I'm so thankful that although there is still a shortage of Pediatric Psychiatrists, more medical students are applying for Psychiatric Residency with plans to complete a Child and Adolescent Fellowship.
