About Victoria Gates

I am not interested in moving away from Boulder, CO.I am a mechanical and aerospace engineer who is passionate about spacecraft, rockets, satellites, aircraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles. I excel at modeling and simulation, and I take interest in control systems. I'm a tenacious problem solver, analytical, disciplined, articulate, and detail-oriented.I am interested in analyzing potential designs for performance within a specific discipline, particularly as it relates to computational modeling and simulation of physical phenomena, within the larger design and development cycle. I find my ability to accurately predict the behavior of my subject matter given limited input deeply satisfying. I am practiced in finite element stress analysis, computational fluid dynamics, computational electromagnetics, and six degree-of-freedom rigid body dynamics simulation. I would be interested in expanding my expertise into other disciplines such as aeroelasticity, transient thermal analysis, orbital dynamics, or especially guidance, navigation, and control systems.

  • Northrop Grumman
    Senior Principal Systems Engineer
    Northrop Grumman Feb 2015 - Feb 2022
    Falls Church, Va, Us
Radar stealth design specialist on integrated product teams for 6+ early-stage research and development projects. Created 50+ computational electromagnetics models to assess and improve radar cross-section (RCS) of myriad air vehicle systems using iterative design processes. Validated models against test data. Derived and managed performance against RCS requirements based on operational analysis. Coordinated efforts among a 4-6 person team. Delivered reports and briefings to chief engineers and customers.● Developed automated tool to allocate vehicle RCS requirements to subsystems; efficiently translating, compiling, and distilling data between sources and formats. Tool has been adopted company wide.● Created more intuitive and comprehensive data visualization method, improving company standard.● Constructed algorithms to adaptively mesh parametric geometry, enabling quick-turnaround trade studies and reducing rework upon redesign.● Crafted widely adopted templates for model input and associated training material; mentored 3+ colleagues in RCS analysis methods.● Championed supercomputer user experience: negotiated with developers to adapt software to interface with workload manager, automated workflow to submit models for computation and receive results.
  • Quest Global
    Project Engineer
    Quest Global May 2012 - Jan 2015
    Singapore, Sg
Simultaneously managed multiple $300+K, 12-month, aircraft engine nacelle certification projects for United Technologies Aerospace Systems, Pratt & Whitney, and Bombardier Aerospace. Ensured certification plans met regulatory requirements; coordinated delivery, review, and approval of 500+ certification documents. Negotiated with airframer and supplier to gain agreement on means of compliance and coordinated rapid resolution of issues. Documented, tracked, and presented disposition of issues and action plans; transmitted certification documents, rejections, and approvals. Trained, mentored, and supervised a 4-6 person team.● Pioneered new revenue stream supporting nacelle certification process. ● Invented, automated, generalized, and documented processes, templates, tools, checklists, and best practices that served multiple projects, reducing cost to establish parallel systems.● Created breakthrough database tools that tracked certification documents from review through approval, calculated aggregate performance metrics, and generated reports tailored to each project/customer. Tools significantly improved productivity and led to continued and new business.● Secured $1M+ in additional revenue to continue Bombardier program and expand service to Mitsubishi MRJ, Embraer Kc-390, and Irkut MS-21 programs.● Established technical design requirements for vendor hardware. Defined program-wide conventions for finite element modeling of engine assembly and components.
  • Quest Global
    Structural Analyst
    Quest Global May 2011 - May 2012
    Singapore, Sg
Created 12+ finite element models of various sizes and fidelities to analyze output stress and life expectancy of Pratt & Whitney’s F119 Thrust Vectoring Nozzle. Performed linear and non-linear steady-state thermal, structural, contact, and sub-model finite element analyses. Programmed scripts to apply boundary conditions, interpolate boundary conditions onto sub-models, solve models, and post-process results. Analyzed, interpreted, and presented conclusions to chief engineers.● Ensured most limiting load cases were selected for detailed analysis by conducting regression analysis to predict output stress based on input load conditions.● Predicted life of components by conducting low cycle fatigue analysis prior to crack initiation and damage tolerance analysis to assess rate of crack propagation thereafter.● Recommended inspection, repair, and replacement frequency and protocols based on analysis.
  • Cornell University
    Teaching Assistant
    Cornell University Aug 2010 - Dec 2010
    Ithaca, Ny, Us
Facilitated one laboratory for GPS: Theory and Design per week. Addressed student questions regarding course material. Graded the homework, pre-lab assignments, laboratory reports, and exams of the students in my laboratory.
  • Cuair
    Project Team Member
    Cuair Jan 2010 - Dec 2010
Member of a 30 person interdisciplinary project team to design, fabricate, and test an autonomous aircraft to compete in the Student Unmanned Aerial Systems Competition. Modeled and evaluated aerodynamic performance of two airfoils using computational fluid dynamics for use in small-scale, fixed wing unmanned aerial vehicles capable of navigating waypoints, surveying areas, and retrieving visual information about the surfaces below. Devised, fabricated, and installed a system to mount a wireless network hub to the aircraft to facilitate communication between the aircraft and the ground station.
