Study social contagion and their blocking over face-to-face and online social networks in Network Dynamics and Simulation Science LaboratoryResponsibilities/Contributions• Addressed important public health questions through machine learning -based analytics of Twitter data. I used unstructured signals from Twitter to quantify the exposure of under-age user to smoking-related messaging. Tweet and user classifications were performed, and estimated the pro-smoking tweets from heavy tweeters that under-18 years of their followers read.• Developed and implemented a computational simulation model to study the combined effect of peer influence and addictive nature of smoking on the smoking contagion. The model was validated by performing simulation studies on the face-to-face social network of the Framingham Heart Study.• Implemented various diffusion and blocking heuristics for complex contagion over social networks by utilizing one or more of the following parameters in combination: seed set, critical nodes, critical edges, and community structure. Detailed simulation studies of these heuristics were performed on various social networks of: Add Health, Twitter, Facebook, Slashdot etc., and contact networks of synthetic population.• As a part of a software team, I also developed a web-based, interactive, visual analytics tool for a GIS-based software system. It allows in-depth analysis of many different attributes of the population of a selected geographical region. This team provides decision support tools for large social, technological, and transportation system of United States and some other countries.

The main focus of the internship was to address important public health questions through machine leaning based analytics of social media data, especially Twitter Data. I implemented tools to evaluate various types of classifier for disease-related tweet classification utilizing diverse set of features. This is a complex process that has several hierarchical tasks, and involves comparison between hundreds of classifier variants. I also developed a client application to extract data using Yelp API in more meaningful and easy way. All the efforts were pertaining to digital public health surveillance.

Responsibilities/Contributions • Developed and implemented a socio-cultural model to alleviate the burden of supervisory control for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) in network centric warfare. • Explored the applicability of predominant cultural traits of military forces and warfare (unmanned) machinery in ISR to produce a desired group behavior with minimum efforts, and therefore make high-level human supervision possible.• A multi-agent based simulation study of the model was performed, and a graphical user interface was developed to showcase the approach and its advantages
