Apollo Tyres Ltd, is a tyre manufacturing Indian multinational headquartered in Gurgaon. The company has presence in Asia, Europe and Africa, with 9 modern tyre facilities and exports to over 118 countries. I was responsible for handling the entire intellectual property portfolio of the Apollo group (including for its international subsidiaries in South Africa, the Netherlands and Switzerland). I was also engaged in the day to day corporate contractual and advisory work of the Apollo group. My scope of work included- Global Integration and Management of IP Portfolio – Conceptualizing, streamlining, and maintaining an extensive IP portfolio (including trademarks and designs). Managing litigation risk related to IP by proactive action and thwarting misuse of corporate/product brands and tyre-tread designs and counterfeiting by third parties. Undertaking sensitization on protection and monetization of IP across the Apollo group and the senior management. Handling related party transactional work of the Apollo group involving IP, as well as advising on all IP aspects in third party transactions. Successfully negotiated with adversary parties in obtaining strategically favorable IP settlements. Transactional work – Extensive drafting, reviewing, negotiation and management of legal contracts for the company and its international subsidiaries. Contracts and transactional work undertaken include joint venture, share-purchase, off-take, sponsorship, media services, marketing, logistic, and distributor/dealer agreements for various international markets, as well as the related party transactional work of the Apollo group involving entities in South Africa, the Netherlands, Australia, UAE, Thailand, and UK.Legal Support for Expansion and Corporate Governance - Providing legal advice and inputs on agreements relating to new projects and strategic investments. Promoting corporate governance by providing advice on the creation of various internal policies

 Supervising and guiding junior attorneys and paralegals in rendering trade mark services to clients.  Conducting pre-filing trade mark clearance searches and advising on registrability of marks. Initiating and managing trade marks and domain name registration processes. Advising clients in respect of IP commercial transactions and rendering comprehensive opinions on enforceability of IP rights. Initiating and managing opposition and enforcement actions relating to trade marks and domain names. Regular appearances before the Intellectual Property Appellate Board and Registrar of Trade Marks.  Preparing presentations, writing articles and undertaking research study of emerging IPR issues. Actively involved in the firm’s marketing and client development initiatives.

 Responsible for handling trade mark portfolios of a predominantly foreign clientele, including several Fortune 500 companies.  Conducting pre-filing trade mark clearance searches and rendering opinion on registrability of marks. Drafting replies/ forms and independently meeting official/ statutory requirements at various stages of a mark’s prosecution. Attending show-cause hearings at the Trade Marks Registry. Conducting legal research and rendering opinion on existing and emerging issues related to all aspect of trade mark law. Supervising the work of associates. Working on trade mark laws of various other jurisdictions (including the Indian subcontinent U.S., U.K. and EU) by way of handling the foreign trade mark portfolio.
