I am Gautham Mohanraj, an aspiring data scientist with career goals to conduct machine-learning research that can impact the biomedical industry by modeling and characterizing biological diseases and organoid development. Coming to the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS) and getting the opportunity to work in Dr. Huaxiao Yang’s biomedical engineering lab at the University of North Texas, I was exposed to novel research and developments in modeling cardiovascular diseases. Our research focuses on this specific aspect, with a dual-step approach in using machine-learning and tissue-engineering systems to create innovative cardiovascular disease treatments. My contributions in the research lab have played a significant role in developing my interest in majoring in computer science with the goal of specializing in biological applications.A notable project I have contributed to is developing a machine-learning model that can accurately predict signs of arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) in human cells. Working on this model, I recognized how computer science applications can improve medical treatment with effective modeling, helping patients with various physiological issues.After graduating from TAMS, I will be majoring in Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin and hope to research in big data and bioinformatics with their research initiative. I want to learn and contribute to the applications of machine-learning and AI in biological fields such as neuroscience, genomics, and cardiovascular medicine, all with the focus to develop better treatment modeling techniques that can advance the medical field. As computer science continues to grow and be of significant influence with new technologies, I wish to earn a career as a computer research and data scientist specializing in machine-learning and computational biology.
