My career has always had more than one thread running through it. When studying medical sciences at Cambridge, I took a year to study History of Art. As a military surgeon I also spent time in research which resulted in a Hunterian Professorship at the Royal College of Surgeons and changed the way that small fragment wounds are managed. As a busy trauma and orthopaedic surgeon at a teaching hospital I spent two years as clinical director and took on a national role as workforce lead, advising the Department of Health on the manning implications of trauma centres.I run an NHS fracture clinic at Lymington Urgent Treatment Centre under the auspices of PHL. It is run with appropriate time to talk listen and explain! Luxury!I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a surgical trainer and for 5-years held a post on the Specialist Advisory Committee in Trauma and Orthopaedics which oversaw training nationally. I was an examiner for the Intercollegiate Board for a decade and have more recently been an international examiner.I have been able to combine my research interests and extensive experience of trauma surgery to advise a spin- out company, CryoLogyx, as they collaborated with DSTL and helped them to succeed in their applications for Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) grants.I have had a medico-legal practice for three decades, acting for both claimant and defence, in clinical negligence as well as personal injury cases. Photography has always been a major interest for me. I believe in the power of the picture to educate and persuade; this has played an important part in my research (recording wounds), presentations and teaching. I have taken on the demanding role of Trustee and Board Member for the Royal Photographic Society. I photograph for the remembrance charity Remember My Baby and I chair their Board.
