About Gavin Cronje

I'm living the dream. I've always been a good problem solver, an independent introvert, and also a bit of a technophile, always obsessed with the latest gadgets. Today I'm working in a dual-role as both a Developer and a Teacher.I started learning coding when I was in high school, mostly from my father, but for me it was more of the thrill of learning something new than thinking of it as a career. After spending some time abroad, I realised that software development was a path I wanted to follow and thus went on to study software engineering at University.Since then, I've worked with a few companies and gained many skills. I wanted to broaden my horizons and decided to make a future in a country I've always dreamt of going, Japan. Today, I'm working in a dual capacity as both a developer and a teacher. In the beginning here, I was purely a teacher, teaching conversational English to Japanese students from age 3 and up. I thought teaching would my way forward here in Japan, but while I really enjoyed teaching, I didn't feel completely fulfilled in that role. I yearned for something more challenging.Having been given the opportunity to code again these last few months, has really given me new life. It's been fun and very enjoyable doing something I actually like doing, even if it does have it's challenges. Being out of the loop for some time, I had quite a bit to catch up on, as my coding had become a little rusty, and getting my groove back has been fun. I’m familiar with a variety of programming languages, including Delphi, TeamSource, SQL, HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, with a decent understanding of JavaScript, PHP, and Git/GitHub. I’m always trying to add new skills to my repertoire, and have started learning Python with Django and Flask, making of API's, RESTful services and more.I would really like to get back into full time coding again, while learning and increasing my skill set. The IT world is constantly changing, and I want to change and grow with it for a better future.
