Local exhaust ventilation and Legionella specialist

As a Senior Combustion Technologist (Supervisor) I work as part of a team of research and development engineers and scientists testing new burner technologies for thermal power plant and carbon capture initiatives. My main duties include the operation of the test rigs to support the scientific data collection and the reactive defect rectification of the equipment should it fail during testing which requires fast paced and logical problem solving. When the test rigs are non-operational I carry out routine maintenance and defect repair of the test rigs, leading multi-disciplinary teams of engineers and contractors on site. Other duties include writing of risk assessments, method statements and operating safe systems of work such as confined spaces requirements, working at height and noxious environments. I also have responsibility for the conduct of the legionella control measures including water testing and chemical dosing of the plant and for the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations re-certification activities which includes testing of all pressure relief valves on the test rig and pressure vessel inspections.

Within this role I was a self employed contractor responsible for the fitting out of new generating sets including installing all ancillary systems both mechanical and electrical required by the diesel engines and alternators. Installation often involved slinging of equipment into position and working in awkward positions. Other duties included fault finding and diagnostics for defective generator sets returning to Aggreko and rectifying these defects within tight timescales to meet customer demand

With in this role I was an important part of a 4-6 man team responsible for the day to day operation of the diesel engines. This includes shift pattern duties (watch keeping) and also acting as a supervisor for junior ratings both while at sea and alongside. Maintenance activities are carried out on various systems in support of the nuclear steam raising plant, such as compressed air systems both HP and LP, steam and condensate systems, hydraulic and electrical systems. On completion of any corrective or preventative maintenance I was responsible for the setting to work of the systems and ensuring that systems are operating within the desired parameters. I was also responsible for fault finding on the various systems, both electrically and mechanically.
