I’m currently an Architect within the Ovarro product team on SCOPE and Stream based products, developing and implementing secure technical solutions around telemetry / scada and related data analytics. Including development of ‘traditional’ and more IIOT related remote communications and protocols. This has been primarily but not exclusively for the water industry.The tech I’m working with includes on-premise solutions, based on both Linux and Windows, and Azure cloud based solutions using a variety of Azure services and architectures. I also work on remote data collection / control solutions including bespoke and Linux based remote telemetry, utilising both standalone and Azure IOT based platforms and communications frameworks.I’m a WITS committee member and have been deeply involved with the development of both the WITS-DNP3 and more recently the Lucid protocols.I’m well versed in implementing ISO27001 based security around the development and productisation of solutions, with some exposure to IEC62443 and its alignment with ISO27001. In fact I’m very passionate about security within technology aimed at the National Infrastructure, and firmly believe integrated security is not an add-on, nor is it an ‘overhead’, its actually a fundamental part of the design and implementation process with benefits in terms of ensuring design processes are structured and audited as well as the obvious ‘in service’ benefits of high security.Previously I spent 12 years leading a team developing telemetry / scada solutions in the same industry, while also acting as an Architect and ‘hands’ on’ development.My earlier experience included 25 years in the metals industry, designing, implementing, testing and installing 5 generations of very successful high speed ( sub millisecond ) control systems for steel and aluminium rolling mills. This included developing various types of multi-node closed loop control system, communications interfaces to sensors, UI design / development, real time database development and experience in neural network development for rolling mill operational scheduling.In terms of tech hardware i’ve worked with everything from DEC PDP / microVAX series systems, Motorola VME / Unix systems, x86 and ARM based Linux systems and EPS32 family micro controllers and more.
