Distribution Engineer Co-Op for Alabama Power. This was my second rotation with Alabama Power at their Jasper, AL engineering office. Another intern and I handled this work as a team without the presence of any other engineers. We divided up the work and consulted each other and the full-time engineers in our office if we had any questions.This semester I greatly improved my knowledge of distribution line design and the concept of reliability. We had several assignments involving the tasks mentioned above. In one case, there was a feeder with excess voltage on the neutral. We had to balance the load on the three phases to accomplish this. So, we selected several taps to measure the current and determine which adjustments would be necessary. Additionally, we had a larger budget for reliability improvements, so I was assigned a feeder to evaluate potential improvements. These improvements included replacing copper wire, broken hardware, and installing switches over CSP transformers and taps for additional protection to the grid. Show less

This semester was crucial in me getting comfortable in myself and my knowledge of the utility business. This would not have been possible without the amazing people I worked with. They constantly helped me and put their own work on hold at times to take the time to teach me and help me with my work. Furthermore, I was grateful enough to be able to travel and work storm restoration for two hurricanes: hurricane Sally and hurricane Zeta. Regularly attended meetings and provided input on finances. Made suggestions to improve traditional policies regarding the chapters finances. Worked with the rest of the committee to determine how much dues needed to be to encourage member growth, while also allowing the chapter to pay off the new house purchased.
