I am a Faraday Institution Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham, investigating the recycling of LIthium Ion Batteries, with broader interests in the recycling of electric vehicles. I am part of the Birmingham Centre for Strategic Elements & Critical Materials.Previously I was Energy Development Manager at the University of Birmingham, managing the development of the Birmingham Energy Institute. The Birmingham Energy Institute comprises 140 academics across the University of Birmingham estate, with over £75 million in live research grants.I have also been involved with Birmingham's input into the Energy Research Accelerator programme, and was involved in supporting this project in the pre-revenue phase.I'm pro-active about engaging young people in science, engineering and technology, and my published work reflects a desire to make these subjects accessible and interesting to a wide audience—taking cutting edge technologies “from the lab” and translating them to a form that can be replicated at home or school.Specialties: renewable energy, hydrogen, fuel cells, sustainable architecture, green business, ecopreneurship, business models, technology management

Founding Member - Critical Materials Standards HubBsi Mar 2024 - PresentLondon, GbThe Hub is a dedicated online space connecting critical materials stakeholders across the supply chain. It creates opportunities to share knowledge on the current state of play and emerging innovations in the UK, and provides international perspectives. A key goal is to identify priority areas where standards can help accelerate progress toward critical material circularity, support innovation and boost growth. Foundational members are experts in their field who are happy to share their insight and experience. They help shape the direction the Hub takes from its early stages by starting and participating in discussions and helping spread the word more widely through their networks.https://critical-materials.bsigroup.com. -

Faraday Institution Research Fellow (Ii)University Of Birmingham Aug 2018 - Jun 2021Birmingham, West Midlands, GbWorking on the University of Birmingham led ReLiB project. The overarching aim of the Birmingham Centre for Strategic Elements & Critical Materials led Recycling and Reuse of Lithium Ion Batteries (ReLiB) Faraday Institution project is to facilitate a circular economy in lithium ion batteries. We will strive to establish the technological, economic and legal infrastructure to make the recycling of 100% of the materials contained in lithium ion batteries from the automotive sector possible. The team will tackle the most demanding technical challenges in sensing, gateway testing, robotic sorting, re-use, recycling and characterisation. The processes developed will be quantitatively assessed by specialists in lifecycle, technical and economic assessment. New business models and regulatory frameworks will be examined in the context of the complete, full-cycle value chain. The ReLiB project will have a significant impact on the safety, economics, and efficiency of battery recycling whilst minimising the environmental impact of these processes. Introducing robotics into the waste and recycling sector, will boost productivity, stabilise the existing jobs market and could also draw jobs into the UK by providing valuable raw materials to feed in further up manufacturing supply chains. -
Energy Development Manager, Birmingham Energy InstituteUniversity Of Birmingham Jan 2015 - Jul 2018Birmingham, West Midlands, GbManaging the development of the Birmingham Energy Institute which brings together 140 academics from across the University of Birmingham estate, with over £75 million in active research grants. In addition to the promotion of our existing portfolio of activities, I am engaged in the development of new initiatives and programmes and have supported the formation of new strategic and academic partnerships. I proactively engage in horizon scanning for new opportunities and potential areas of research funding, seeking questions that our expertise and capability can address.I am engaged with partners from industry, Government departments, UK Research & Innovation, NGO's, think-tanks and other Universities both in the UK and internationally - with particular focus on the Midlands Universities that form the Energy Research Accelerator.I have been involved in the co-ordination and facilitation of large complex cross-disciplinary funding bids - across disciplinary and departmental boundaries, the creation of new research centres within the Energy Institute and the organisation of high level and large-scale events. The Birmingham Energy Institute shapes & informs public policy by convening "Birmingham Policy Commissions", examining issues germane to the energy policy debate. These focus on areas where the University has particular expertise to leverage. I have managed two such commissions; 'Doing Cold Smarter', chaired by Lord Teverson and 'Powering West Midlands Growth: A Regional Approach to Clean Energy Innovation' chaired by Prof. Sir David King. Our research centres, include:- Birmingham Centre for Energy Storage- Birmingham Centre for Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Research- Birmingham Centre for Environmental & Energy Economics & Management- Birmingham Centre for Strategic Elements & Critical Materials- Birmingham Centre for Railway Research & Education- Birmingham Centre for Vehicle & Engine Technology Research- Birmingham Centre for Nuclear Education & Research -
